Shane Hurlbut: The Next Gen in Digital Film Capture: Canon’s 4K 1DC

@dustylense
that doesn't change a thing ...
he is great DP but he does what he does ...
he has agenda to push canon DSLRs because that is a part of his business ...
so dont mix his work as a DP with his marketing as a businessman ...

Not even the fact without him, the DSLRs wouldn't have the acceptance as they have now. He's doing something for the low budget moviemaking.

i wouldnt say he push DSLRs in to moviemaking ...he pushed CANON dslr and become very rough on any other alternative...
Hurlbut helped people with canon but make difficult for people with panasonic , sony or any other low cost equipment ...
and sometimes his claims sound intentionally ignorant ...and now with 15000$ dslr he sailed away from indie waters... but nevertheless his blog is great place to learn DP craft ,lighting ,cheap alternative for expensive equipment and lens...
he is guy who bets on only one horse and that is a horse he owns ...but that doesnt make him bad ,no, just human ...
like everything in life nothing is black or white....

Notice the image off the right side of the Hurlblog. These are his sponsors - they give him something, one way or another. There are incentives at work here. So we can all essentially expect the Hurlblog promote those sponsors in emotional ways, bordering occasionally on hyperbole. Here are some examples.

Regarding Canon:
"When you harness 4K into the small footprint of a 1D, give it the processing power to record to little CF cards with no external recording devices needed, then deliver an image that crushes the F65, Epic, Alexa in one fell swoop."

An image that crushes the F65, Epic, and the Alexa? Seriously? After watching a number of Vimeo videos from most of these cameras in an attempt to negate the effects of web compression, I just can't agree.

Regarding HP:
"HP is my electronic viewfinder with the HD DSLR color space. Never before have I been so impressed with the visual accuracy."

Never before - none of the industry standard production monitors or editing bays or private screening calibrated projectors (Flanders Scientific, Marshall, Christie, etc.) have done it like the HP Dreamcolor.

Regarding SmallHD:
"Small HD is the only monitor that can deliver an image that you can expose with."

The only one. If you are using something else, you've got trouble.

Mr. Hurlbut is certainly entitled to his opinion, but when it's published under these circumstances, I have difficulty putting a lot of faith behind those words.

Concerning the video, I didn't care much for the story, especially the ending. Technically, I found it to show a significant improvement over the 5DII and the 7D - the resolution is better, the aliasing and moire handled. The most notable aspect, I think, was the low-light performance and the provision of such clear colors at night. I certainly didn't finish the film thinking that this sounds the death knell for the Epic, Scarlet, Alexa, or F65.

hey, guy needs to eat... :)
but kidding aside ... use what is a best for you and ignore marketing hype ...but if you are a guy who can benefit from that
because u use same equipment ,good for you ,for others try to steal some of his DP knowledge...

If u read the comments on his blog I asked about the epic. Here's the reply:
"the Epic is a tested digital capture device. This is in its infancy,it has all the dslr quirks and you have to know how to shoot DSLR’s, period. Know how to show the camera’s pros and not showing its cons is what I have been working on for over 3 years. But I have to say that in its infancy, the two side by side. The 1DC blows it out."

Man I gotta say, it just can't be. Epic is incredible, raw 12bit 5k. There is just no way that the image is better from the canon, it's mathmatically impossible!

Great DP? If i judge only on the short presented here, im not impressed. Im not saying it's awful but i could see many shots there with poor lightings im afraid

"Have you seen this C500 footage?

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread...%28by-Codex%29"

Just did on an admittedly crappy monitor. The night stuff looks good. The bright sun stuff looks like crappy DR. The new Blackmagic handles highlights better (at a fraction the cost). Not impressed, and would rather the sun stuff be shot on film, or high DR camera that can handle it. Not convinced Canon gets it, sorry.

All, really no reason to bag on Shane here. He's doing work that a lot of people are happy with and he's making a good living using DSLRs for very large productions. I admire that.

Concerning the video, I didn't care much for the story,

I think you're actually giving it too much credit with that statement. Also, the performances were so heavily-handed it was distracting. The opening lines were cringe inducing. I think Hurlblog needs a new director for these little shorts...

C'mon, let's first put a grain of salt when there are interests behind. He's a professional. We all know what this means, don't we? ;)

Do you want to hear something quite frankly? Pay attention to Barry's words, do not only praise him with no reason because he's the resident guru : ) We have now any tool able to be prime time or be academy awarded. Is this a bad thing? Choices should never be an excuse for a complaint in order to usually whine about under the principle that 'my girlfriend is prettier than yours'.

Like someone said here, the world is not B&W. He defends his Lady, like I've seen others to do the same everywhere. OTOH, the point is when he's pushing the Canon DSLRs, he's getting everyone with him. He is one of the most interesting DoPs worldwide. Why? Because he comes from film realm, knows very well his craft and even throws away the elitist attitude from box office standards. Against the existent rules.

Opinions... It is funny how easy is to find people pronoucing statement over some others' craft. In my native country where there are 10 million people, we are used to say we have 10 million balcony or sofa soccer coaches who are, at the same time, film critics. But only one is José Mourinho... LOL ;-)

Eh, looks good, but I think the new Blackmagic definitely has an edge over the film look / organic tone department. I think the BM looks much more like film for 1/5th of the price... and it's raw... and it's 12bit. Who on earth would buy the 1DC when you got cameras like this coming out?

People who don't like or want to deal with S16 frame size...
