Shane Hurlbut: The Next Gen in Digital Film Capture: Canon’s 4K 1DC

Glad we got to see what everyone was raving about...

Not sure what everyone was raving about, now that I've seen it.

Crushes Epic and Alexa? ... Okay.

Shane Hurlbut is always overenthusiastic about CANON...i remember that he claim that 5d2 beats kodak vision at zacuto shootout ... many DP laugh...
but not with him ....

It's strange because he actually said that he didn't like the C300 so it can't be just Canon paying him. It's like Shane doesn't always understand why something looks good to him.

But what he does understand is lighting, excellent work.

Maybe the 1D-C is exactly the right cam for Shane.

I was at a workshop in DC for a private screening of Act of Valor. Shane said that he compared the C300 to the 5D one day after his purchase and some shoots. He said that the image from the C300 was sh***y when he saw the 2 cams next to each other. I know a few people took his words to heart. I think the 1DC is the camera he's been waiting for as you state hence a lot of love for it from him.

Maybe "crush" in extreme low light situations, but this is telling:

"I could care less that it is 8 BIT color. I am getting it very close, and Dave Cole, our colorist at Technicolor, had a huge range to deal with. Canon’s 8 BIT feels like 12 BIT with its color space and reproduction."

Well, it ain't. The camera looks pretty good, having fixed a lot of the DSLR issues, but let's not have a religious epiphany. I'd take the Scarlet, and the bit depth, and the HDRx.

Yea he seems off his rocker a little bit. Still, I look forward to what he'll shoot with that camera over time as it gets adopted into his DSLR pipeline.

Its a nice looking short. Used colours well.

Well HDRx really needs an Epic for a start. And I was completely of the same view as you that was until I started shooting on a C300 - 0 banding and other usually associated issues.

The resulting movie looks very good, but I do get this feeling that if this OLPF removal thing of the MK III is what they claim, then this could have been done with that camera as well, with minimal if any visual differences at all.

I'd have a hard time choosing between full frame 4K at 8-bit 422 and 2.4x crop 2.5K recording 12-bit RAW; luckily, the 5x price difference makes the decision a lot easier

Is there someone here who is at the Nab and have seen some footages of the C500 and new 1DC on a big screen? Any comment about the picture quality? How does it stand when compared to Epic and Scarlet lastest demo ?

Despite the price, i must say im still attracted by the ergonomic design and i found the picture by itself to have a strong organic character which it's difficult to resist...
Do we know now the price of the C500?

Since all this 4K DSLR technology is brand new, and Canon probably isn't exactly sure how to price it, they seem to be erring on the "very high" side. I guess we'll soon see if the supply/demand matches what they are expecting!

Personally, I think if this tech was in the 10K range, a lot of people would be a lot more excited about it, and the criticism would be much more muted.

Also, I think if they believe they can have the same pricing as Leica/Arri/Zeiss for their cinema lens, they are exactly wrong. Maybe think "Red PL" type pricing and they are in the ballpark.

...then deliver an image that crushes the F65, Epic, Alexa in one fell swoop..."

Crushes F65, Epic, Alexa?! It crushes blacks, that's for sure... Not so much with log gamma, but still - I don't expect DR to be on par with Alexa or Epic. I'd love to be surprised, though

"Tell that to Christian Bale."

I was in complete agreement with Bale on that one. When the scene is filming you shut up, or you go work somewhere else. What the hell are we doing here at $100,000 a minute? The director or AD should have given him the business before Bale needed to.

Anyway, someone is saying Scarlet doesn't include HDRx?

"SCARLET-X functions as a flexible device, utilizing HDRx and interchangeable lens mounts to provide you with options in a world that’s always changing."

Absolutely Scarlet is the better 4K option.

But now, one day later (an earth rumbling day to be sure) my money would go straight to that Blackmagic cinema camera. This Canon 4k dslr has no appeal to me on any level, whatsoever. Fifteen thousand dollar dslrs? Yeah right. You want my liver too? And will it be obsolete by September when Canon realizes RAW actually is better?
