Shane Hurlbut: The Next Gen in Digital Film Capture: Canon’s 4K 1DC

I made the comment about Scarlet and HDRX, I never said it didnt have it - I said its barely usable.

He doesn't seem to like the C300 at all.

In his test against Alexa he used Cine2-mode, because they didn´t want to grade the footage, which is a bad choice. Cine-2 looks very videoish. If he had used Cine1 or C-Log it would look very film-like. And in EOS Standard it looks pretty much like a Canon DSLR like the 5D.

He also believes the 1D-C eats the others alive, which is just as much an exaggeration. They all have their niche-market.

"I made the comment about Scarlet and HDRX, I never said it didnt have it - I said its barely usable."

No you didn't. You said this:

"Well HDRx really needs an Epic for a start."

You haven't explained what any of that actually is supposed to mean.

Scarlet can do HDRx and 4k at about 12fps. So it's not really there, unless you like to crop your lenses and reduce res.

Eh, looks good, but I think the new Blackmagic definitely has an edge over the film look / organic tone department. I think the BM looks much more like film for 1/5th of the price... and it's raw... and it's 12bit. Who on earth would buy the 1DC when you got cameras like this coming out?

hmmm....to be honest the BM does´t blow me away at all when I don´t look at the price. For being so cheap it looks good, but look more like film than others? really? I think many are blinded by its price and see things that are not there. its main advantage is the RAW DNG format.
but for the real tv-series the 1D-C, the C300, C500 will be the tools that are used.
there is just more to a camera than what´s on the SSD.

when you buy a car you might just want 4 wheels, an engine, slick tires and steering. maybe breaks.
but most people pay extra for air-condition, ABS, ESP, air-bags, board-computer, radio....

the BM has some of these, the 1D-C has others. get what fits you, but don´t question the decision of others.

Somebody who needs/wants 4K, low-light performance, and doesn't need RAW? Come on, seriously - folks need to get out of there head that their own personal desires are the only valid options in the world.

« (...) for decades we never use one camera to tell a story. (...) The 1DC has its own look and feel. One that I have embraced for over 3 years. To tell a story multiple arrows in your quiver are required, its also depends on the director’s vision and the 1DC is one of those powerful arrows. Shooting 4K all in camera without any external recording device is huge. Shooting film I would shoot on a Panavision Platinum camera for my A Camera, then I would shoot with an Panavision XL for steadicam and B Camera, then an Arri 435 would be my C and D camera for high speed and rigs, then a Arri 235 for action handheld. As a cinematographer these are my personal preferences, but the story will speak to you and tell you what to shoot, always base these choices on the story over the tech. »

I think it's just a matter of changing taste again. He can say it beats KODAK Vision and Alexa and Red and other sorts but -

Personally, I preferred Shane Hurlbut's work on other formats. I'm not really into the 5D and now 1DC look he's promoting. Just looks really digital and smooth and too shallow depth to me. I'm old school!

no false but we are talking about man who is in love with FF canon DSLR ...there is no much rationality in his claims(better that sony f65, 20mp sensor and 4K 16 bits 444 RAW) ...
i saw his 1dc video it looks good in DP craft but as image quality i was disappointed

I didn't. This is the Canon DSLR look with clean lowlight performance we already know (including DR class of its own) minus the usual issues apparently now of past like aliasing/moiré, in the best story ever told in a product demo.

We even had the right to an original song ;)

We've seen it in SD on Vimeo and because 4K acquisition is sharp enough, the downsampled version holds very well, at least as much as any other example shot on Kodak Vision in the sharpness/resolution/definition department. What's the reason for your disappointment?

i know its vimeo presentation and we cant judge image quality by compressed flash ....
its me and i dont like canon colors ...i expect more neutral look ... and its so close to c300 by the image quality ...but i like c500 , more filmic (power of RAW) ...
and faces still had little plastic look but thats probably vimeo.....
lets wait for better quality examples ....

Have you seen this C500 footage?

Same guy who said Master Primes were s*%t. Said 5DmII was up with 35mm film. He also owns a rental house that exclusively rents Canon DSLR's and lenses. His work is good, but Canon is his thing. We can't deny that and he's going to defend and promote his colors.

Same guy that releases number 1 box office movies.
