GH4 Shane Hurlbut tests V-log on the GH4

Follow some S-Log shooter's advice and overexpose 2 stops and you'll end up with 10 stops below middle gray and only 2 stops above!

Hi Barry,
have to correct you here, S-Log2 has about 6 1/3 Stops above middle grey. If you overexpose by 2 stops, you still have about 4 stops. That should be plenty, unless you have very hot highlights ;)

I think Barry means if you apply S-Log practice to V-Log. He's saying if you overexpose V-Log by 2 stops you'll end up with only 2 stops of headroom.

Yes, exactly. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough. I am saying that the advice used for S-log does not necessarily apply to V-Log L. It might work fine for VLog (with 8 stops above and below) but it would lead to a very unbalanced 10/2 split on V-Log L.

Either above or below you don't expose it perfectly for what ever lut you are using and you will not be happy when using Vlog. I have shot a ton of videos with the pix Eh5 an vlog in 10 bit and sometimes the footage is great and someones its shot. So I am guessing it users error but at least with the other profiles I had much more control over the image. But thats just me.... I am going to see what the leeming lut with Cine D does with a 10 bit recorder and go from there.

I think you'll be very happy with my LUT and a 10bit recorder, as it will be truly using the full 10bit range for beautiful and subtle tonal range throughout :)

Cheers,

Paul :)
