Shane Hurlbut, ASC & Bandito Bro's interview about the 5DII (A Disruptive Technology)

It's interesting that Hurlbut mentions that a Director brought him a 147 million dollar project and because of the 5D platform, they figured the film could be brought in at 60 million. Now that's a language that Hollywood listens to. He explained to individual investors that their 4 million will look like 25 million on the screen. What else needs to be said to get a producer on board?

I liked when Hurlbut was asked about rolling shutter and aliasing and his concerns he said “Well you’re not going to be shaking the camera around etc. Jacob Rosenberg stepped in and said “not everybody”…then he had a disheveled look on his face and said “some people did” as if he was disappointed in whoever made that mistake. But Hurlbut went on to talk about moving the camera in a “traditional” way. I think that is important for folks here to know….HOW to properly move a camera. That will translate into better looking images where the weaknesses of rolling shutter would be minimized. He said “the pros outweighs the cons.” In regards to the sharpness and resolution of this camera I like what Hurlbut said :“For all the technical folks out there who want to say that this camera doesn’t compare to any of the high end HD cameras….Yes…correct. but when you are involved in the story and the shoot etc…..then you are in it.” He’s basically saying….so what. Surround yourself with the right people and you’ll know how to solve the moiré issues and then some (good attitute).

Their hope is because everyone is using these cameras the problems will be solved very soon. Canon has listened to them so far.

It’s also cool they mentioned Magic lantern also.

Not in this interview but elsewhere, Hurlbut has said he has shot with Genesis and Phantom and they look like bad 70's video compared to the 5D. Canon does skin tones right compared to the plastic skin tones of Red according to Gale Tattersall and Hurlbut. Interesting. But us photographers have known that about Canon for years. The 5D does not look like video and that's the important thing to me.

Great stuff here. In short.. tell a great story and the 5D will follow.

Definitely deserves a sticky.

They're also saying pretty clearly to use the right tool for the job. With respect to car mounts, they say film is still the right choice.

A little side note: over all the awesomeness of having three 5Ds to film this interview with beautifull out-of-focus backgrounds, they seem to have forgotten that sound is as important as picture...
Of course, still worth watching! ;o)

Yes...ha ha...the sound stinks in this interview. But suposedly there was a glitch and they had to use in cam sound at the last moment.

i was thinking the same thing. great interview though from storytellers first and tech heads to a lesser extent.

it would be interesting to know the story of that

After feeling both the tascam and the zoom I felt the need to avoid the plastic and buy a Sound Devices - well out of my budget - but felt the cheapies would leave me with egg on my face - the sound is unnacceptable to present to a client IMO

a lesson for everyone kitting up?

ZOOM H4N???

That's the very first time I've heard that the quality of the Zoom is unacceptable. Then again, we don't use the omni mics, we're running wireless lavs and booms into the XLRs.

That may be the reason.

the H4n's internal condensors are only for ambient unless they are real close to the subject and in a quiet and dead room. they really fall short in an enviroment thats noisy like this place was. short of lavs here...a few shotguns hooked to the H4n would have been an improvement.

Uh, they did use shotguns but they were plugged into the 5D's. Here is what was written by Matthew Jeppsen in a post on the same web page as the videos about what happened with the audio:

"There’s an audio recorder on a small stand just behind the A camera. Unfortunately it was acting up that day. We ended up using the backup audio from the 5D MKII DSLRs equipped with shotgun mics (with manual audio levels set). The shotguns were Azden SMX-10 models, a svelte little $65 mic that kicks ass."

Lucky they had those shotguns on the 5D's or it could have been much worse. I bet they weren't even monitoring the Zoom H4n for sound quality.

Zoom H4N sounds as good as a Fostex FR2 to me. Those Fostex machines feel really cheap and have a bunch of issues themselves. The Zoom H4N isn't perfect, but its great for low budget projects.

I’ve never used a Zoom myself so not too sure about its feel or build. But being a sound guy myself I have to say that the Zoom should be able to produce great audio. The engine behind it is just as good as any decent audio recorder. So, it’s only as good as what one feeds it.
