Shallow Depth of Field

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

Aw yes, I too have heard of this trick. There is no way in hell I'm putting vasoline on my dvx though!

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

vasoline on a clear glass lense screw-on rather than the lense itself. Works but.....

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

jesus i can't believe people still do that.

However, what does one do if one is shooting in a confined space and can't help but be close to the actors? THEN how do you get a shallow depth of field while keeping your subject in frame? Is there another way?

One of the advantages of Hollywood-All they have to do is knock out a wall!

Re: Shallow Depth of Field
Three things control depth of field (dof): focal length, focus setting, and aperture.

The longer the lens (telephoto) the less will be in focus. Pulling the camera back and zooming in helps reduce dof.

The closer the lens is focused, the less will be in focus. Focusing farther away increases dof.

The wider the aperture the less will be in focus. Reducing the light intensity and opening the iris to a smaller f/stop number will reduce dof. Using the ND filter or adding additional ND external filters opens the lens aperture. More light stops down the lens increasing dof.

So try to zoom in as much as possible, reduce the light levels, and close focus to decrease dof.
Don't forget about the distance from camera to subject and subject to background.

They still use pantyhose too!
I hear sheer control top works the best!

And the cotton....nahhhh,that's *too* tasteless

:P :P :P :P

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

And these things work... you've got to know what you're doing, but both pantyhose and vasoline do things that conventional filtration just doesn't. You can certainly get some neat stuff that you can't get otherwise if you experiment.

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

Vas might work but buggered if i'd be putting it anywere near my camera! its horrible stuff! :o

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

Vaseline on the lens will have no effect on depth of field! Vaseline (which should never be put on the lens, only on a piece of glass in front of the lens) will soften the image, like a soft/fx filter, but it will have no effect whatsoever on depth of field.

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

well it kinda can.. meaning if you apply the vaseline onto a locked off lens "around" a subject that is stationary it will look like the background is out of focus.

You ask me, doing it that way is a total joke and anyone who would even think of doing that has way too much time on thier hands.

Sure it does, frame your subject, and put vaseline where ever your subject is not, and ask him/her not to move.  ;D   LOL!  I crack myself up sometimes.  But don't worry, I'm not dangerous!   ;)

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

Aw! Zoom!  You beat me to the punch!   :P

Well, thats what you get when you don't type as fast as the masters! ;D

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

ha ha.. If someone goes and actually does the vaseline thing I will give you 5 bucks for a photo.

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

There's a variation on the vaseline trick. Take a filter and smear it with rubber cement the same way you would with vaseline. But after it dries, you can peel it off with no residue.

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

Jesus it just keeps getting better ......

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

I have 2 cats that secrete some really gnarly crap; I wonder what kind of diffusion effect I can achieve...

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

lol I wonder if a normal admin would lock a post at this point.. Hate to have people puke when they read a forum ha ha ha.

Then again.. some people may consider it "art"

Re: Shallow Depth of Field

I have to be on my best behaivor all day (work, my son, etc); this is where i can be myself! Now, back to my cat issue...
