Shaky LCD Display

On my LCD display all of the text and menu displays are vibrating something fierce.

The actual image looks steady, but the on screen display looks twitchy.

Is this normal? Is there something I can do about? Am I even making any sense?

Thanks,

Chris

Is it actually moving back and forth, or is the text just blurrier than the actual picture? A lot of people have reported that their text isn't very sharp (and I concur, it's a lot blurrier than the image itself or how it looks on the DVX LCD), but I think that's just unfortunately the way the HVX is. If your text is actually jumping around, then I would guess there's a problem. Perhaps you could take it back to the store and compare it to another HVX they have in stock?

Let me try to explain, you know the 4 white lines on the display screen (they look like title safe lines), those lines are noticebly shaking/vibrating even though the image the camera is recording is perfectly still.

Is that normal?

Chris

They shake on my camera, too. If you want to turn them off, you can - just go into the display setup menu and change "safety zone" to off. Since "90%" is just an approximation of where safe areas "most likely are" anyway, I find they get in the way more than they help. But no, I don't think that's a defect of your camera (any more than anyone else's).

Haakon,

You are quicklly becoming my new favorite person. :)

One more question on the shakyness, I also see it very noticably when I put the camera into MCR mode (in the top line and the bottom line - where it says "DVCPRO HD"). Do you see it there as well?

Chris

Yeah, it's there. I think that's just a side effect of a mediocre LCD more than anything else. I realize that putting a 9" HD LCD on this camera was obviously not a realistic proposition, but it would've nice to have something a little better than we do.

One thing you can try doing is using the viewfinder as opposed to the pop out LCD as it is actually sharper, but obviously it's got an area the size of a postage stamp and it's next to useless for shooting HD stuff. I don't see the "focus assist" function as great benefit but a necessity because there's no other way you'd ever be able to get anything in clear focus without it. Part of all of this is the limitations of using a $6,000 HD camera, but I definitely understand that some aspects of it can be really frustrating... especially coming from an SD camera like the DVX that just works. As they put out new technology, they'll learn new things, and I'm sure they'll improve it. It's just important to recognize and talk about the problems (like you are doing) instead of just praising it for "what it is capable of as a $6,000 HD camera," because there's no other way that Panasonic (or any of the other manufacturers for that matter) will know what concerns us. Just like the issues about noise that are being discussed in another thread, I think the low pixel count of the LCD is also a severe limitation. Hopefully they'll address that in a revised model!
