Anybody know of any websiters that have free shake tutorials?

If you are interested in learning how to use Shake, I highly recommend getting the Apple Pro Training book on Shake. It also comes with a 30 day trial version of Shake.

Apple Pro Training book on Shake is great. They even have a quick start, a smaller book, to get you up and running faster. But I'd just get the bigger book and JUST DO IT.

Apple used "cross grade" to mean going from G5 to Intel machines. As in, across platforms.

No, Shake (or whatever it becomes) will not be a part of Final Cut Studio. Trust me, the next generation Apple is talking about won't be so cheap.

Hi Folks,
I'm a full time compositor and use shake quite a bit. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. You can check out my new demo reel at:

Here is a link to a podcast with the guy in charge of Shake at Apple discussing Shake's future...haven't got a chance to listen yet, but I'm sure it's interesting:

Interesting. Apple remains pretty tight-lipped about future products (what & when) but it's nice hearing their thinking regarding Shake. Mine has been shipped with an extimated arrival date of July 5th. I can't wait to jump in and start learning it. I'll be using the Apple Pro Training Series Shake 4 (scanning through it as I await Shake's arrival) and I just ordered The Art and Science of Digital Compositing as a companion piece.

It was interesting that Apple wouldn't comment on the delivery mode of the next generation of "Shake." Hmmmm...stand alone? Bundled with Final Cut Extreme?

Thanks for posting the link.

Even better... Hey Sam, did Boyd get his way and do it as a 4K show?

Maybe I've missed it in the thread, but I don't think anyone's mentioned that Apple announced that this is the LAST update to Shake.

No more updates will be released while Apple works on the next generation of compositing software.

This will not be a big deal now, but might be in a year for major users if their next gen program isn't ready yet.

yeah I know ... you know space ships and such have to be fake ... but its even more impressive when the compsited background suddenly drops out on a BTS or demo reel and you never knew it was fake ... or there are some scenes in the Ewan McGregor movie on there that I'm not sure where the compositing or effect is ... pretty sweet

Its hard for me not to gush about this stuff.

I was on set on a Tony Scott movie and I completely surprised (and made the day of) the steadycam op by going up to him the next day and saying how blown away I was by his work ... he had to walk down a plank backwards (with an assistant - but still thetre was aligator swamp all around) step backwards over a closed trap door, pan down as Denzel Washington opened the door, and then step BLIND over the open trap door as he moved back to a standing closeup.

It was just kick ass to see his toes tap the far side of the hole, make sure he had solid plank and then step forward over the hole and then watch the playback which looked like a dolly/crane shot. Awesome!

I guess not a lot of people come up to steadycam ops and gush over them like they scored the winning touchdown in the superbowl, because he was pretty pleased.

I get excited about the invisible virtuoso in the film - which can really only be seen in behind the scenes material or on set.

Basically, it seems that they are counting on Shake to hold them over while they redirect all their talent to their new product (as yet, unannounced). You can bet they will not allow themselves to lose ground they have already been able to "conquer." Their next release will probably be sometime in late '07 to '08. Shake seems to have a good foot in the door. They are willing to sell the source code to their big customer, albeit a hefty price tag, though probably not for the high end user.

They are counting on increased sales to a segment of the "digital" population that has heretofore found it price prohibitive to purchase Shake. (For my use I couldn't justify $3000, but I ordered it the day they dropped the price to $499!)

They feel they did extensive beta testing and are comfortable there are "no bugs" in the new issue. I'm sure it will be solid, but there are always bugs. It just becomes how bad are they and are there work around.

Who would have guessed shake has tutorials that come with it that show you how to use the program. Keying has never been this easy. I think being able to toggle thru the color channels like that is just brilliant. I wonder if apple will discount the certification test price of shake now that the catipillar is in the cacoon.

Sam, would you share with us your workflow on an affects-laden motion picture. Do you tell them what you need to create an effect, or do they tell you what they want and provide you with footage they feel will be necessary?
