Shake price drop.

Strange.... Mac rumors is claiming that Shake's replacement isn't due till 2008!

Just 'bout to order the student version which is half the price again! :)

BTW.. If I'm reading correctly, some folks with Final Cut Studio or Logic can get Shake for $49 as a
crossgrade.
Looking on the Apple site it seems to imply that you can only get the crossgrade if you had a previous version of Shake (Which means it aint a crossgrade!) unlike being able to crossgrade from say Motion to FCP Studio.

I hope somebody proves me wrong though!!

hey, i liked your reel, especially the fieball effect, would you be able to elaborate a bit on how you got that? it looks like you juled the girl then filmed something burning and composited them together?
thanks!

Thanks for the comment, here is the basic workflow on how I did that shot.

On set I stuck a piece of ribar in the ground, then I layed on my back and positioned the camera accordingly (since I didn't have a tripod that would get low enough). I had the girl stand there with her hand resting on the ribar for scale/allignment in post. I then layed there while my crew put a pigs heart on the end of the ribar and doused it in lighter fluid and lit it afire.

Now, I brought a piece of black posterboard to put behind the burning heart so I could use some garbage mattes and an add node (transfer mode) to comp in the heart, but I forget to use it on set since I was laying on my back keeping the camera steady, so I had to rotoscope the flames the best I could, which was a task to say the least. I ended up doing the roto in PS because it was easier to paint a mask rather using a rotoshape in Shake.

I then took the two plates and painted out the ribar in the shot with the girl, then took my heart roto and put it over her hand. I had to roto out her fingers to put the heart 'in', then added some heavy light/fire wrap and some adds of the fire over itself after being blurred to give it that bloom look.

I can post a still of the shake node tree with some other stills of the footage if anyone is interested in seeing it.

I'll post it here tonight, when I get home.

Hehe.. I'm backing up a shot today.. heres the tree:

68 frames/2K cineons/3 image sequences and a serious ton of roto and
paint work.

That looks like a strand of some disease.

Just imagine what the screenshots of King Kong looked like? >.<

I've worked on some shots with close to 700 nodes on Dinosaur. Its the big
helicopter shot on my reel. We spent 6 months on it. 15 seconds were hacked
off the end for the theatrical release. Overall the shot was something like
1400 frames.

That thing was a beast.

One thing I realized when I first started using shake was that I need a bigger monitor. I use node tree's nowhere close to that amount and it's still cumbersome.

Greg, have any tricks/tips to manage that kind of tree? How do you get the color blocks to show up? I've been meaning to read up on these UI things, but I keep getting mired down in learning other parts of the program.

That was mostly Illusion at that point. The first Shake betas started coming in
during the last 3-4 months on that show.

Those are the groups... you can lasso a collection of nodes, then 'group' em into one. When expanded, the nodes in the group are all on the colored 'curtain'.

I guess you should just work logically. Its basically 'chutes and ladders' so start
at the top with source images and work from there. Create groups for things
that logically go together to create a stage or element. Those groups can then
be cached or even 'pre-rendered' and replaced with another 'file in' node.

Here is my tree for the burning heart shot. Not quite as elaborate as Greg's but this is one of my first attempts at comping in Shake.

The whole tree...

The original girl plate, and the painted one

The original burning heart

After roto work

With the mask for the fingers

With light wrap around the fingers

And the final comp
