SGPro Vs Redrock M2

Charlie Anderson

Not so clever
I created a video comparing the 2 products as I wanted to see a side by side comparison of each adapter.

Here's the link in FLV format, I'll update with a MOV version as well:

http://www.stratatekstudios.com/movies/SGProVsM2.flv

It's on youtube as well (as I mainly created the video for a class I'm taking).

on another note, I realize in the video I say I'm going to do slowmotion as well as fast frame rate (basically the same exact thing, I meant to say fast motion) but I mainly stick with slowmotion throughout it.

Feel free to comment. Thanks!

Charlie

Hiya, you really need to create an SWF to play that FLV.

What's the youtube link?

Also if you are doing a side by side comparisson, you should really show the video at the highest possible res you have so we can see. And with as little a compression as possible. Unfortunately a 320x240 youtube flash is going to suck.

What format did you shoot? HVX HD? SD? What size frame 1080, 720, 576, 540?

Also I'd post some hi-res screen grabs as jpegs at the highest quality, the biggest frame size so we can compare.

Brilliant,

Thanks.

You can view the footage with Quicktime. Just make sure it has flv as extension.

To me the SGpro won by far. I do have to say the DP did more of an effort with the M2 shots, but if you compare the shots that do resemble, I'd definitely go for the SGpro.

Yeah I plan on doing a high res version at some point, the DV footage wont go into a 1080i sequence for some reason, and I really don't have time to mess with it right now.

Good thinking on the frame grabs, I'll do that tomorrow and post them for comparison.

This was made for a youtube class so it was really rushed but the youtube link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEUsegXyfV4

Yeah the SGPro is really nice but I like the look of the M2 personally, just my taste and forte I guess. I originally planned on shooting the exact same amount of footage for both (and I thought I did) but when I got to the editing room I realized I had more M2 footage than SGPro...oh well :)

I have a new film that I am DP on that's coming out in a few weeks or so, I'll post it once it's finished.

hmm, i prefer the sg pro.

there are some qualities i just don't like about the M2,, not sure what it is, but i can see a difference.

I think sgpro does a better job in the bokeh and it seems that it keeps it background a lot crisper than the M2. Especially if you look into the background trees when on the CU shots using the handgun. If you pause and look at the trees in the background you can see a good DOF vs M2 it looks like it just gets washed out together as one big clump of trees.

Hiya Charlie, its just the highest possible version of what you have shot. So if its DV res, just post that for now ! Same as stills, these really only need to be the DV res stills from the master movie.

I'll look at the youtube video and post back.

Shooting hi-def later in a test is a great chance to see up close what these two can do. I would recommend having the two set ups side by side on identical cameras, same settings etc... that way you can really see how they perform as the only variable will be the two 35mm adapators themselves.

Thanks
Richard

Thanks, unfortunetly I don't have multiple setups available (only have 1 hvx and M2 and a few lenses) but I appreciate the input :)

Just wanted to try something different and interesting, still learning about all of this stuff and what not, but shooting makes perfect!

not only that, but the laste son of celeste showed many examples of the trees bokeh, and how the M2 slightly distorts straight lines, making them curve with the spinning GG pattern. Slightly bends all straigh lines that are very out of focus.

Having used both the M2 and the SGpro. I have always found the SG Pro to produce a better overall picture. Especially when it comes down to edge to edge sharpness. Also the the SG Pro requires less "zooming in" to get rid of vignetting and thus gives you a little more room for adjusting your shots. (at least on the HVX200)

I'll see this directly for myself. I'm shooting 2 shorts on the M2 and then I'm directing another short that;s being shot on the SGPro thanks to Antar. Should be a good time, I'll post them all on here once I get them done.

I generally agree about the SGPro and replaced my redrock with it, but be aware the the SGPro is already more zoomed in than the Redrock or the Brevis,. You don't ever get full 35mm Vistavision framing.

Lenny

Sure you do. The projection on the Sg is the size of the 35mm SLR frame. If i just wanted to eliminate the vingette of the adapter edges i only have to zoom in to about Z64. though Z77 is the "35mm" film plane for a motion picture camera. if your HVX has an off set block it can mean you will have to zoom in more and give the illusion of more zoom than neccesary. MY HVX is slightly off, but Tim Naylors HVX is spot on straight and his camera loses the vingette at like Z63.

Z63? I'm over 70 as I recall and though didn't exactly compare to 35mm SLR directly, I did compare my Brevis and Redrock and my SGPro is much more zoomed in. Doesn't look off center though.

I'll check it again. Bizarre how much difference there can be on an HVX.

On my XHA1...i zoom in between Z70-Z72 and have no vignetting issues using the my SGpro.
i'm glad to hear that I can zoom in as much as Z77 to get 35mm film frame. So
i guess I am within vistavision guidelines right?
