SGpro+slowmo uprez'd HD

OK, so i've had an SGpro for a month or so and i'm loving it. Bought an Ikan8000HDe monitor to flip the image and help with focusing - brilliant bit of kit. Still using my Nikon 50mm 1.8 as it's the only glass i have. Everything is mounted on a DVRigPro which can just about take the weight, because my back can't :(

I'm still in the process of testing under various conditions, with the intentions of putting it all to use in corporate, wedding, shortfilm, music promo work in the future.

Here are a couple of vids from last weekend as i promised...

On Top Of The World - http://www.vimeo.com/4257756
Just went up to Helman Tor at sunset with a few friends and messed about. Graded looks in Magic Bullet.

Field of Bees - http://www.vimeo.com/4273411
Shot in 50i mode with some 25P shots. 1/500th shutter for 50i bee closeups. Squeeze mode. Imported into AE & used Twixtor to slow clips to 50%, imported back to Premiere for grading in MBLooks.

Both vids uprezzed to HD size.

Here's a question....
Is there any method of filming in 50i mode for slowmo where you don't lose half the resolution afterwards? In my mind it really becomes apparant when looking at the shots of the crop flowers that the res has been halved. Anything you can do in post to improve the quality or is it gone forever?, and would getting a HVX and shooting at 50P for slowmotion totally bypass this problem?

Any input appreciated.

when you say you imported into AE then used twixtor... did you separate the fields like in this article to get slowmotion - http://rarevision.com/v1/articles/slow_motion.php
or did you just use twixtor? or did you do both?

if you just shoot in 25p with a high shutter and just use twixtor instead of the field separation, you can get some half decent slowmo without losing rez. but it will be less smooth.

first vid was awesome!

Yes Patrick, i conformed the footage in AE to lower fields & ticked the 'preserve fine edges' box. Then in twixtor i set the source to lower field and made the output 50%. This stretched the time similar to how AE would strecth it 200% with timestretch. Exported lossless files and imported back into 25P Premiere timeline. I am not overly happy with the loss of resolution which i believe is due to the 50i footage's interlaced frames.

I had looked at that article but it refers too much to NTSC framerates which confuses me. Can anyone translate the process into a PAL 50i/25P tutorial only?

Yeh i did find that used twixtor on 25P footage gets some decent results, as there are a couple examples of that near the beginning on the 2nd video.

Wow that is some amazing looking footage. Really great stuff. How did you mount the monitor onto your DVX? in the future I would like to get an LCD or portable DVD player to mount on for when I get an adapter, but how do you rig it onto the camera?

this is what smettli wrote when i kind of asked the same question

Here is what you do: Shoot in 50i with at least 1/120 shutter, create a new composition in after effects(make sure comp is set to 25fps), import your interlaced clip, And then(this is the most important) before you ad the clip to your composition you right-click the clip and choose "interpret clip ->main..." and in the window that comes up you check the box "conform to 25 fps" and make sure that "seperate fields" is set to "lower first"(this will make a 25p file). When that is done you ad the clip to the composition. Make sure that the comp timeline is set to twice the length of the clip and make sure that "motion blur" is turned off. You then highlight the clip in the comp timeline and roll down the "layer" menu and choose "time-strech" and type in 200%.
And now you render the composition, and the clip is done as a slow-motion clip.
then you import that clip into a 25 proggresive project in premiere and edit it as you like.

nice footage by the way
