Would like to compare in this way:

  • Mainly ease of use
  • Build quality
  • Ease of setting up
  • Bokeh
  • How easy it is to use run and Gun

As a former owner of the SGPro and a current owner of the LetusEX, I would definitely recommend the Letus Extreme over the SGP. Its simply a better more robust machine.

although i've owned the ex , I decided to sale off and purchase the sgpro again. to sum it all up for me. i never accomplished the organic film look on the ex as i have with the sgpro out the box. i couldn't stop down past f4 without grain and outside that was just not accepablr to me. however for low light lost the ex is your man. for the most pleasing bokeh i think the while forum might agree the sgpro.

Yea the ability to stop down past f5.6 is probably the SGpros only real benefit over the LetusEX. As for acheiving a convincing film look, thats mainly the reason I ended up selling the SGPro as the Letus definitely creates a more natural film look.
As for bokeh, this is an issue that ultimately has more to do with your lens selection than the adapter.

I agree with the lens selection thing...

I shot this with a friend's Nikon D80 using a ziess 100mm Macro:

My biggest thing is getting as much latitude a possible, and it seems from what you two have said the SGPRO can go down past F5.6 and that you mean like f8.0 -11 right?

I love how the letus looks, but the SGPRO seems very sharp must be those extra fstops.

They are really very comparable. As an owner of both I do not think the Letus is better built. It has a big solid body but few people have any idea whether its more robust inside. I've seen more complaints here about Letus malfunctions but that may only be because there are more of them out there.

The Letus is probably a bit easier to use run & gun and to set up at first, but I think the SG is a very beautiful picture.I have never seen a consensus here that the letus is more natural, but everyone has there opinion. The Letus can have more prickly back focus adjustment issues. Spinners are less prone to dust problems. Speed probably similar.

What exactly is back focus and can you post any grabs from both adapters?

personally which ever adapter suits my needs is the one I'm going for.

(which is strong contrasts, least light lost, and flexibility Fstops)

and the Sg you can go above 1/125th shutter speed, try 1/500th at f8??? lol, light loss it will loose, but it make up in better images overall. My opinion of corse. Try them both out. then see what happens.

I chose the SGpro, Its the best out there for me, and its streaks ahead of the letus. If you have seen the autopsy thing, where they take the letus apart, you will see very quickly how tacky and 'thrown together' the internal workings of the letus really is.

The motor that supplies the vibration only works because it has a big blob of hot melt glue stuck to it. Dosn't sound like good build quality to me....

Hoarp001,

Do you own a Letus?

Ergh, course not, ive used them and I did my research and made an informed decision which I stand by.

In my opinion the letus makes a great paperweight.

i personally went with the SGpro and love it. It loses more light but with the DVX that isn't a huge concern as it is fairly responsive in low-light. I get great images out of it.

It was also a little cheaper than the other 35mm adapters i was looking at with a flip and rods and all that. i'm very happy with it.

Unfortunately, the SGPro I had was autopsied a couple of times as it had to be sent back for servicing on two seperate occasions. That was pretty much my end point with that piece of crap before I ended up buying my Letus Extreme, which luckily to say has not had any issues whatsoever in 8 months. That said, my next step is definitely buying the Letus Ultimate!

You do not know what you are talking about. At all.

The "hot glue" is a mod the owner added. It is from the factory nor is it required to make the Letus work properly.

Your quote is just misinformation.

I had a chance to play with both adapters and I went for the SGpro. I felt that it is sturdier, has the better mounting system, let's me stop further down, and produces nicer images (but looses a little bit more light). I don't want to be negative about the letus and these observations are subjective.

I have used two adapters on shoots... the M2, and the SGPro. Never used the Letus, but the SGPro is the definite winner above the M2... we used two SGPro's for shooting a full length feature over 17 days, and they held up great!

I never took any images with the letus but I dont like the design or overall shape. Rail mounting is a must for me, and I dont like the way the letus sits up on that rather precarious stalk. i also prefur spinners as it allows more stopping down and I use it on a steaidcam and I heard that the vibrations can cause problems, although I never tried it myself.

The web page with the autopsy of the letus stated that the hot melt was put there by the factory to 'caliberate the vibration', it never said he had stuck it there himself. if he did and failed to mention it, or if I mis red it, then thats my mistake.
