SGblade or Redrock micro encore

The Redrock is noisier than the Blade, obviously you can vary the rpm of the motor on the blade but even at full speed it's considerably quitier than the Redrock.

I suggest you drop a line to Martin Beek, who has extensive experience with both. He also wrote a pretty extensive article on his search for the ideal adapter which you can read here:

Hope that helps

Wow that was a pretty terrible review of the SGBlade. I've had only three problems with over 100 hours of shooting with my SGBlade. I've worked with the original Redrock Adapter (not the Encore) I think it was the M2 but I could be mistaken. You can see footage from both shoots via the links below.

My problems with the SGBlade
1. Hard to perfectly Align with my HVX200a. I've tried it twice and am still not 100% centered.
2. I had one shot where I could see the spinning gg. It was my first full shoot and I was out in the snow with a very bright sunlight reflection and the motor was turned all the way down... My own fault.
3. If you've read my previous posts you'll find my joke about the batteries refusing to die. I think the instructions said the double A's would last 10 hours and mine lasted close to 60.... (probably see problem above as I had the motor turning on the slowest rpm's for most of the time) I'll add here that my gg has refused to spin on maybe 4 occasions on the lowest RPM. So as a rule I now shoot with the knob turned 1/4 up which gives me more noise but promises rotation.

I'm gonna say that all the adapters are most likely going to work for what we're shooting and they're all going to have little problems. I'd like to go on record and disagree with the above review because (although it could be true) I don't think it's an honest review that accurately portraits the majority of Shoot35's Blades.

Now I should say a little about the Redrock I used.

I really really liked the look we got from it. The owner said something about using a toothpick to flip the image and that confused me but we shot the Sh$t out of a short film with it. I was happy.

When it came time to buy my own, I decided against buying a redrock because I thought the LETUS had the best look and after months of research I was about to sign the check when I found the Blade. Don't ask why I didn't notice it before. Maybe I did but because it was a foriegn job I might have dismissed it until I started seeing the video's and reading the reviews.

See the links below for footage from SGBlade and Original Redrock

Hope This Helps

Screen Grabs

The first 4 are from the Redrock. The next set is from the Blade.

Note they are low res.

Zblock

it's too bad you haven't tried the M2 Encore. The original M2 is over 5 year old technology, so it's probably not a good comparison and certainly not representative of what the Encore is capable of.

Also we haven't had a chance to post up all the new gear from NAB (where we are now at) but the M3 might also be of interest to people as well:

Adapters are still popular and we continue to devote time and effort to advance Redrock's solution.

Cheers

Absolutely. I'd love to, and sometime soon I hope I get the chance. M3 huh? interesting.

I read that Blade review and was a bit confused because it looks like there is a mistake on the dates and one entry looks like early 2010 instead of 2009.
I concluded that he had a very early model of the Blade when Wayne was going through lots of scurrying because the achromat wasn't working on the EX very well. He probably did announce that it was good prematurely ( just like every other adapter maker has done incidently) . However he worked pretty hard at getting it right and within a few months had it down.

Re: ZBlock's comment about difficulty centering his Blade. This is also a common problem that I've found on virtually all these adapters. My Blade is slightly soft on the lower right hand corner but still as sharp even there as my Letus. When I tried a Letus Ultimate it was exactly the same - on 2 different cameras. Part of this might be the that the chip lens alignment on all these sub 10K cams is funky. There may also be some slop in the adapter alignments also as I have seen some differences between Extremes and Blades on the same cam _I think (not sure about the last statement.)

Summer this year. Anyone can come check it out at cinegear in a few weeks in LA. cinegearexpo.com
