SGblade or Redrock micro encore

One of the things I like about the M2 is the spinner, so I'm always interested in adapters that use that, as opposed to vibrating or, heaven forbid, static.

Poor RedRock M2e never gets any love. :embarasse

I shot a short film on the m2e not too long ago and got great results. The edge-to-edge was decent and the bokeh was very good. I really like the square box design of the M2e and the collimating lens mount is easy to set up.

Anyways, check out my film "After the Party" for what you can get out of the M2e.

I haven´t used the Blade or the M2e. But I have one of the old M2 and I have used the Letus Extreme.

I can say that there´s no miracle 35mm adapter, and that all of them takes some tweaking. Also, I think that it takes some time to master them, and by that, I mean that it takes some time to know your gear and to get the best from them. Of course, some takes more time than others.

I got really good footage from my M2, and I mean really good. Saying "I you wanna get footage that looks like a coke bottle get whatever..." is not right. But that´s just me. And I think we discussed enough before about 35mm adapters quality, they all produce good footage if you know how to use them.

Get whatever you think that will fit you best. You´ll get very good results with any once you get the pros and cons of them.

So please, ENOUGH.

Cheers and good luck!

martinbeek it is the first time that I read something bad about the blade and what you have written is really hard.

YO! This is a TECH forum. there is no saying "enough" to a technical product comparison. It is not at all true that you can get as good results with crappy equipment, and you can also waste a lot of money on overpriced equipment - like the Ultimatte - why bother when the Me2 is in no way less good (actually a bit better) and less than 1/2 the $?.

Martin, That's one hell of an article about your experiences though the dating completely confused me as you went from March 2010 to April 2009 as though they were in sequence.

If you meant to say March 2009 then my recollection is that was a very early version of the Blade and the optics of the fix for EX-1 were not up to snuff yet. It took a little while before Wayne got it right. When he did it was very good - pretty much up there with the Letus Ultimate at triple the price. New battery system now which is improved also.

It's possible that the "edge to edge " sharpness claim was exagerated at the time ( I can't recall) . Frankly I've been using these things for a number of years and every single manufacturer has made that claim. Like you i was really PO'd when that wasn't true particularely on EX-1 and I posted rres tests here. The results were all over the map th, so you needed to find out for yourself. Not a great situation but its the way its been for all of them. For that reason I've been dubious about the Encore but only because I never used it myself. It may be great.

I can tell you now that the Blade is very sharp and reliable for me on an Ex-1 and I'm very picky about the optics.

Incidently you described the Letus Elite as a spinner and its not - a Letus Extreme with back focus correction aqdded.

We love the Me2.

YO! Look at how many "technical comparison" responses got this thread and you´ll get the enough part.

If someone has something more elaborated than saying "get whatever if you want your footage like it was shot through a coke bottle", welcome.

And when I said that he will get good results with any, I think is very clear that I´m speaking about the Shoot35 or Redrock adapter. Mainly, because that´s the thread´s title. So I don´t know why are you bringing the Ultimate or crappy equipment to question, because this is not the case.

At the same time it's very useless to ask these type of question because the response is never going to be based on technical observations. Getting a ton of "The Blade looks amazing" or "the Encore is very sharp" doesn't help you since there's no point of reference. 90% of the respondent will most likely have used only one or the other adapter, and everybody has a different camera, lens, setup etc.

You also get a very skewed opinion depending on where you ask the question. Reading this thread one might think that the Blade beats the Encore handily since most of the response recommends the Blade. Ask the same question on the Redrock forum and you'll likely get very different answers. Much more important to narrow the question to specific technical point of differences, and then we can start to get more constructive answers.

I wouldnt call it completely useless... if you ask this type of question and do searches you start to see patterns which may lead to good choices such as...

-If you have an Sony Ex1 your best bet is the Encore or Letus..these have the best fixes.
-For small sensor -1/4" camrcorders the Brevis will give you the least amount of vignetting.
-For most other cameras, the sgblade is hard to beat for it's price point, quality build, and bokeh.
-the cinemek doesn't exist

-If you have an Sony Ex1 your best bet is the Encore or Letus..these have the best fixes.

You're still getting sampling errors by asking the question that way. I've read posts from Blade owners who are also very satisfied with their fixes and praise it to the sky. It's possible that there are many people who are happy with the E2E performance of their adapters but aren't bothering to chime in. Unless somebody who have all three adapters and an EX1 and is willing to shoot and post resolution charts, these type of comparisons are misleading and ultimately meaningless.

Ditto. Where's the comparison? Vignetting changes significantly depending on the lens being used too.

Opinion. All the adapters are priced pretty similarly now, around $1600 give or take.

-the cinemek doesn't exist

Well, here's one I can agree with.

Not trying to bust you, but I've been against these "versus" threads for a long time, be they camera or adapters or anything else. We get so few technical scientific comparisons and so much "impressions" that it's not helpful to anybody.

That's why I said the best bet. There have been reviews that cofirm the letus and redrock working well with the ex1, notably Philip Bloom who has tried pretty much all of them. The others adapters have had mixed reviews. So the best bet is with the letus and Encore.

I've posted some in the past. I couldn't get rid of vignetting on my blade with my 1/4" sensor cam. The same lenses worked great with the Brevis. OThers have experienced the same across various forums. The brevis has a seperate set of imaging elements made just for 1/4 " cameras.

Yeah opinion of course.. But the sgblade with flip module, rail mount, and case is 899lbs which comes out to about 1300 bucks. The cheapest spinner from the big 4.

Have to agree with Huy about opinion and heresay - My extensive tests have found Blade to be sharper than my Letus Extreme and similar to the Ultimate on the Ex-1 . My Blade is also faster than both though it shouldn't be.

I have a SGBlade and an Encore and I use canon FD primes and Nikon primes, I've found the edge to edge sharpness on the SGBlade is better than the Encore, as is the light loss (marginally). I prefer the build quality of the Blade and it looks cooler too, the Redrock design is a little square and bulky. I had the Encore first and I loved it but since investing in a Blade I choose to work with it over the Encore, everytime. But if someone brought an Encore to a shoot, I would be happy to work with it too. The bokeh you get with a SGBlade using rr2 is amazing! :-)

Stewartep,
Any observations on the noise level of the motor on redrock encore vs the sgblade?
