SGblade Beta Tester Reviews & Feedback’

Ok, so I went back and looked at this older thread where I was asking about film and sensor sizes... and I got the S35 size "picture used (35 mm flat 1.85): 0.945 in (24.00 mm) by 0.511 in (12.97 mm)" so if you can film a 36 x 20 projection at 16:9 then does that mean that we'll be getting more like a Full Frame 35mm still photo? And we could zoom in a bit and get a longer telephoto AND deeper DoF?

Hi,

Yes that's right, you will get full 36mm width (still photo) in 16:9. With the non flip you will be able to zoom into academy (depending on camcorder) or zoom in fully with the flip module.

Thanks for answering.

One last question for now. Is the resolution penalty noticeable for zooming in? The best feature on my Ultimate was that throughout the zoom, I had no discernable rez loss. So I'd use it like a "variable prime". If the glass GG of Blade allows for full zoom through without noticeable rez loss that would fantastic.

Sounds like the flip with x/y and zoom through is the way to go.

Anyone test the zoom through? Where's the footage everybody? Haven't seem much except the theater piece from Denmark. Love to see some footage that really test the parameters (ie. exterior skies, high stops, shutters, wide angle, etc)

Tim

Today we received 2 samples of our new flip module & achromat, oh boy are we happy! Its smaller & lighter yet the internal prism is bigger! We will be testing soon with an EX1 and will post a video showing sharpness all the way to full zoom. I can assure you that the GG will hold resolution up to full zoom. Also the results from our initial tests today looks as though the new achromat will also hold resolution and edge to edge up to full zoom. More testing to do! :D

ok, we know when it will be possible to buy a new adapter, when will i be able to buy full setup with new flip module?

USlatin: The sky-timelapse was given sent to me from my director who is also editing. I think he wants to show the whole thing in a short timeframe, hence the fast speed.

On the sgblade non-flip I zoom as far in as I can (within focus range)with the xh-a1. Haven't tested any wider than my 28mm(don't have anyone wider yet), and I'm not sure if the vignette is caused by the lens or not being zoomed in enough. But I will find my pentax to EOS adapter and test it on my canon 400d still camera.

hey tim,

yes you can zoom all the way in. in 1080P i zoomed in on a 20mm , till it looked like a 50mm. Res was the same.

So will the new flip and achromat be included in the SGblade packages when we order / reserve them (within 2 weeks  ) or will that be something that will be available later or specifically only for the EX1.

Oh, and is that "within two weeks" almost one week now? :)

Wayne, I once heard you were going to start shipping the flipped version first and offer the non-flipped tube later. Is this true? I think I can live with flipped footage - light loss and weight are my priorities...

Smettli, you know I was seeing a little jump but I think that was from running other things at the same time in my Laptop which has slow HDDs... showed it today to my girl and it played flawlessly... she found it very "pretty and relaxing" hehe...

Timur you got the FOV of a 50mm out of a 20mm?! WOW that is a crap-load of zoom in! Are you doing speed tests today? :)

Wayne, so the non-flip does S35 16:9 and FF 16:9, and you can also zoom in tighter, AND from the sounds of it there will be very little resolution loss at max zoom with probably all cameras, probably only measurable but not very noticeable... (sorry if I expect a lot from your products but I think you've set a strong precedent). This is all I want and more! So I guess FF 35mm lenses are the way to go.

Wayne, two questions for you please:
1. Around how big would the capture area be at max zoom with an HVX or 170? Just an idea if you can estimate it in terms of other popular sizes like 2/3.
2. Could you please explain to me the diferences between non-flipped and flipped in terms of zooming capabilities? I just want to be sure I uderstand everything and as of now I think it seems you guys are saying the flip will be able to zoom a bit tighter which I guess means the light travels longer in the flip than in the non-flip tube.

Serious though... the differences between this beta with the new achromat once you can get one from Wayne will be hard to see, if there is any at all. I bet 99% of the tweaks will be aesthetic and, if any, the technical tweaks would be indiscernible to consumers.

Shave off the screw sticking out, or add a little handle to it and call it a day...

Don't forget available NOW.

Or the price!
