Hi Everyone,
Getting this notice out late, because I’m frequently late, because this project has consumed…everything…but I wanted to drop a note announcing the New York screenings of my featurette Sex and Justice, a neo noir crime drama, at Tribeca Cinemas on February 6th and 7th. I’ve included some more info below for anyone who is interested in the details. I’m producing this under a sort of customized DIY model, and hope to be able to sit down again, eventually, when I have more time and a better idea of how things are shaking out, with even more details on what has and hasn’t worked for us.
I’ll also put a disclaimer out there about my production and post-production set-up. Sex and Justice is my second film, and I’m pretty much self-taught (or taught by forums like this one in addition to books and DVDs) as a diretor/producer/editor, so I’m still learning when it comes to photography and effects work and etc. I’m also poor (like so many other young filmmakers) and still without a big network of connections on the production end, so that’s also a reason why some things may not be as stylish or beautiful as they could be. Then again, there are artistic, practical, and budgetary reasons behind, for instance, such decisions as the non-use of adapter lenses. But I can go into those if and when someone wants to know more – and I’d be more than happy to discuss, because especially in terms of photography, I’m all ears in terms of suggested improvements for the next one.
But the real point is that my co-producer and I set about trying to make the best film possible by focusing on what we thought was most important to the success of our particular ultra low budget “indie film with high aspirations.” Just described nearly every indie production…I’ll get on to those details.
Anyway, here is the info on the screenings. The additional entertainment for each screening will be represented by a comedic short, and a Q&A with members of the cast and crew. While I wish I could do more, any forum members interested in attending can feel free to contact me for the student discount promotional code, which will save you a few bucks.
Hope you can make it!

Logline: Two frustrated detectives and a confessed murderess take on a corrupt but recently vindicated District Attorney in this throw-back neo-noir crime drama.
Summary: Sex and Justice is the story of four people ensnared in a complex web of murders and vengeances. It begins with the unorthodox interrogation of a confessed murderess (Elizabeth Fiara, played by Rebecca De Ornelas) whose interview soon causes new suspicions to form around her interviewer - recently vindicated District Attorney Norman Turner (played by Richard Brundage). Turner’s corruptions are already well known to Detective Robert Bryant (aka “The Texan,” played by John-Patrick Driscoll), but the extent of his partner’s (Detective Robert Montgomery, played by Jonathan Patton) involvement in the entire affair remains a mystery.

- Shot over the course of three and a half days on a pair of HVX-200s
- Produced under original business model for the production of financially viable short-form content of professional quality
- Crewed by a mix of professionals, friends, family members, and students.
- Edited on a MB Pro (Intel Core Duo) with FCP Studio (including some basic color correction).
- Sound mixed professionally at a sound studio (one of the few things I didn’t do during post)
- Original screenplay, developed purposefully so that it could be shot over two long days (we went over time and budget during production) with a minimal number of locations and a small cast
- SAG signatory project (Ultra Low Budget Agreement)
- Cast primarily in New York, shot on location in Rhode Island (where I’m originally from)
- Premiered successfully (thanks in part to some DVXUser advice on how to best prepare my footage for HD projection) in Providence at the historic Columbus Theatre.
