Severe drop out problem DVX100B, please help.

Ok, I have a really bad drop out problem.

First of I got my DVX100b last may, brand new. Ever since I got the camera I’ve only used one tape stock, FujiFilm.

Now here’s my problem, it’s happened twice now, once in late September last year, and once tonight.

I get these random horizontal strips going across my frame for a few seconds, the even ones have motion in them and the odd ones are completely static.

The first one in September occurred during a wedding on the couples final kiss, it lasted for about five straights seconds, worst time for this to happen. Here’s a frame.

The next one occurred just tonight at a corporate event, lasted for about two seconds. Here is a frame.

Now when I’m shooting it doesn’t show up, it’s only when played back. It’s also permanent on the tape, I tried looking back at the footage through several different cameras and it’s the exact same thing on each one, so it’s imprinted on the tape.

Could my heads be dirty? I’ve only used one brand of tape and I have only 48 hours on my heads. Maybe I should use a tape cleaner, I have a Sony Mini DV Head Cleaner but I never used it, still wrapped. I just want to be sure what I should do, or if anyone recognizes this problem as more serious then maybe I should get my camera serviced.

Please if anyone has any experience with such a problem, please let me know how to treat it.

Thanks allot in advance to everyone.

Dropouts occur for several reasons but what you should definitely do is:

1. Buy a PANASONIC Cleaning Tape
2. Follow the DVX Instruction Manual and clean your DVX heads
3. Buy PANASONIC DVM63MQ or PANASONIC DVM63PQ Mini DV Tapes
4. Once you start using one of those tapes - STICK WITH IT AND DON'T CHANGE THE BRAND!

You only have 48 hours on your head and I think Cleaning Tape and PanaMQ or PQ Brand should solve your problem.

Cheers

Ok, thanks allot for the responses.

I have a Sony Mini DV Head Cleaner model: DVM-12CLD, it's non lubricated, could this be ok to use on my DVX100B?

Please let me know, thanks again in advace.

Genesis,

I use a Pansonic head cleaner. There generally is an error or a red warning light regarding you need to clean your heads while shooting. IN the past, when i had a warning, i would pop in the cleaner and immediately the camera would have no problems. I have owned a 100a for years and never really have had drop out problems. i suggest to shoot Panasonic DVM 63 PQ or Sony PDVM-40N. Stick to 60 minute tapes etc. and you should be good. Never had any issues with drop outs with either one of these tape stocks. the Panasonic tapes are cheaper and you can but them on www.tapestockonlne.com to save a buck.
