Several editors with feature

Hello Guys and gals!
I have a bit of a dillema...
I'm shooting a feature next month with HVX and there are 3 editors (incl. myself), however herein lies the challenge:
2 of those editors can't handle HD and are avid xress pro....
How the heck can they edit in DV, pass me the edited sequences and just relink to the HD files on my PC?
Is that not possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I'd go and make window burns (timecode overlays) onto the DV for them that correspond back to your HD timeline. Maybe have 10 seconds of black or leader on the timeline so that capturing the DV is easy and then you'll have extra lead in for the HD editing. That way you have actual on screen cuts and points of reference.... Then once they give you back the edited DV..., you can match up their edit cuts to your sequence. Just be sure that when you are cutting your HD that you don't ripple delete or upset the rest of the timeline.. What i do is just cut and razorblad at those edit points.... then move that clip forward and then continue on the uninterupted sequence..

If you need more info send me a PM.. I'm sure others also have easier ways but this way has been the most straighforward... Shoot, they don't even really need to give you back the edited DV.. They cut just give you an EDL or a timecoded edit decision list...

hope it helps

I'm fast becoming famous for overlooking the obvious (or missing the point entirely) but I gotta ask, Why can't the handle HD?

If they have current (version 4) Xpress Pro software then is's only $49.95 to upgrade to Xpress Pro HD on Avid's website (free if they have ver 5).

Actually they are running PC laptops, that can't handle Xpress Pro HD.
I'll test out that workflow JUSTYN... Thanks for the info!
I see exactly what you're saying... it does sound like a lot of work but practical...
Thanks again!

Were the laptops too slow, in the cpu department?

I just got a new laptop (inexpensive) that handles Edius nicely, but now you've got me worried it might not handle Xpress Pro Hd.

How fast should a laptop be for Xpress pro hd?

They are pentium 4s (not mobile pertium 4s)... 2.8 ghz... maybe 1-2 years old.
The problem I had with my laptop, is that when I loaded Xpress pro HD, timeline wouldn't even play correctly... it was all choppy and extremely slow... (and this was editing 480/24p footage!)

HOWEVER, this is my experience using AVID, if you're using Premiere, canopus or another software you should be fine...

I think that Xpress pro HD uses a lot of processing power because it is trying to send your footage through firewire... 4.6 never did that, so I just edited with regular old Xpress pro 4.6

Good luck and hope your new laptop works!
