my question now(since im not where the cam is to test it myself) is if it matters whether the cam is set to 0 or 7.5 ire when outputting via the composite, ar s-video to calibrate a monitor.. if i remember correctly it does not matter, cause the analog outputs always have the 7.5 setup level, but could someone confirm that for me. otherwie ill check tonight.

Re: setup level for calibrating monitor

The output level of consumer and prosumer cameras, DVX100 included, are 0 IRE for analog and of course DV.

Confusing? You bet! Keeps production costs down, I guess.

The problem with setting the setup to 7.5, is that the recording will be at 7.5. This will mess up the video when using firewire, cause that always goes out at 0 IRE.

Your best bet is to turn the brightness up on your monitor to adjust the pluge on your bars. Not perfect, but close. If your monitor can be set to 0 IRE, that is perfect. You could get a proc amp, if you must have a monitor set to 7.5 IRE, like my PVM-8045Q.

Re: setup level for calibrating monitor

Firewire goes out with whatever was recorded. Nithing gets changed. Changing the set up does affect the recorded black level of the image being recorded. But once recorded, the transfer over firewire does not change the image, levels, color etc.

Exactly so. If you record with setup 7.5, the blacks will look washed out when exported via firewire. It will look good while recording in your monitor, and probably while exporting via analog with appropriate levels set on your capture, but DV will not be right.
