Settle a debate on the Iris of the HVX.

I've got a mate who won't jump into the HVX because he claims that unlike a "pro" camera you can't ride the iris as well ...

In other words the iris "steps" rather than being infinitely adjustable between increments like a mechanical one.

Is this correct? Is this even noticeable? I've got pro beta-kit and even though I would concede it does make better OB kit, I wouldn't go so far as to call this a deal breaker.

So, how does the iris work on the HVX? It seems smooth enough to me. Never noticed a step.

The DVX had a few steps between the actual steps so you could ride that pony pretty smooth. The HVX has larger steps, but the steps are small enough not to make a difference. Slowly Riding the iris though is kinda lame in nature anyways, if you are in a situation where you need to rack your iris, its usually not a slow rack but a fast rack (interior to exterior etc.) so those steps are even less noticable.

The "steps" are so fine that it would take an extraordinarily trained eye to notice them. The iris is calibrated in 1/6-stop increments, so while there are actually tiny steps, they are TINY. You could easily ride the iris and I doubt anyone would know the difference.

well you can see the steps, for sure, its not that invisible, but the HVX inputs a small ramp after the input, not a lag, but a ramp in the electronic iris between the end points of each step so its not a hard step, but a soft one.
