Settings.

Hello all new to the forum and new owner of the DVX. Can anyone suggest settings for a short project I will be working on and ultimately be transferring to film?

COnditions of the shoot. Stark daylight, one subject, no artificial lighting, lots of background action (crowds).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! ;D

Re: Settings.

Control your highlights and overexposure through the use of flags, etc. David Mullan refers to this as "negative lighting". Putting large flat black panels near the subect removes reflection (and thus some of the lighting from the daylight).

If you are going to have a lot of detail in the highlights, then preserve them with cinegamma and set autoiris to -2 if you are exposing with the camera.

Detail set to THIN if going back to film to get better resolution of the busy backgrounds.

BLACK level is a prefercne to how the kimnd of detail you want to retain in the shadows and how you will be correcting in post. Check with your video to film facility and refer to:

This will give you and your facility an idea of startng points based on what the camera cam deliver for true black capture depending on settings.

HIghlights will start to blow out withing 1.5 to 2 stops over keylight so keep that in mind when doing the negative lighting concept. Perhaps a filter like a "black net" type might help control the highlights.
