settings questions

i've been using an older 100 demo model while my 100a arrives...a few noob setup questions:

what (if any) menu settings do you tweak to compensate for
herring-bone jitter and hot spots in 24p/24p advanced?

the iris/gain seems really harsh compared to the Canon XL/GL series and Sony's i've used. any help, settings wise, to even out that harsh contrast?

looking to get some filters as well:
hear good things about Tiffen's 1/2 Black diffussion/FX,
Tiffen's 1/2 Gold diffussion/FX, and 1B Softnet (for retro looks).

my working goal is to get close to the old 16mm style interviews "look" for docs and corporate work.

any good 24p advice, links, faqs etc are appreciated!

Re: settings questions

Two suggestions:

avoid hotspots, and realize the exposure range of video, i prefer to use zebras, some people dont

and herring bone jitter, most cameras will have problems with these, avoid them, but if you must use them, use patterns in which have larger blocks of squares on them but few.

If the pattern is too fine, most cameras will dance the pattern

As for the iris, gain........no gain is better, but i think the dvx handles gain really nicely.

practice control, using nd's, filters, whatever you can invent, without blowin highlights

iam not a big filter fan, i prefer them in post, most importantly is my raw footage is well exposed, from there you can do a lot.

like the saying goes, garbage in garbage out, peace..
