Settings on a DVX 100a to somewhat Match the 720pn mode on an HVX

Hi

I'm bit of a Panasonic novice pardon me if I ask a lame question. I've previously worked with an XL1s and have switched over to the HVX. The problem, my camera is not in and I have a shoot coming up. I spent enough money thus renting an HVX is not an option. The subject matter will be outdoor dirtbike action.

My question is, I borrowed a DVX 100a from a friend and plan on using this camera for my upcoming shoot this week. I'm looking for advice on a setting for the DVX that can edit decently with footage shot on an HVX. My thoughts are to shoot the 24P "squeeze" mode. Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate some feedback.

By the way, this forum has been a great resource for me in making the switch to the HVX.

Regards,

Ian

first of all you cant match 720p with an dvx because there two different formats. One is shooting HD and ond is shooting 480i, the dvx footage is going to look like ass compared and you will eather have to up convert your 480i footage or down convert your HD and thats not what you got an hd camera for. Now unless your not shooting HD on the HVX, you can shout 24p advanced, squeeze mode and mach your master ped settings and it will look the same. You do want to shoot in squeeze mode on the hvx or dvx to retain your picture quility and lines of res, compared to shooting letterbox were they just mask the top and bottom of the screen and all those lines are used to creat black borders. hope this is not to confusing, and before i forget, if you play it back on a regular monitor its going to look squeezed, like an old carate film, you must capture the footage in 16 x 9 in your edit system and it will stretch it back to wide screen and retain your line count.:costumed-smiley-047

Never, ever, ever, shoot squeeze if possible. It softens the video and looses vertical detail/resolution. DVX squeeze electronically process the vertical resolution, degrading it as compared to letterbox. I suppose if you absolutely have to there's no choice. You are actually better off just shooting 4:3 and scaling the video in the NLE to fit 1.2 wide screen. Neither squeeze, letterbox or in NLE scaling will produce HDV resolution. You must upconvert not only for scaling but for resolution.

This is an alternative solution that I just tried and it worked well, In my case I repurposed DVX 24p 4:3 video for SD widescreen and got the benefit of the HD 720p resolution but the software is actually made to upconvert 4:3 to full HD 16:9.

Download the demo for a trial. As they say "the proof is in the pudding." It watermarks the footage until you purchase the license.

There is also a product called Photzoom Pro that uprez's video to 16:9 and is fairly good in comparison to native HDV. There is s sticky on the process in the DVXuser forum. here.

With the Instant HD you don't have to output intermediate TIFF files to scale the video. It does the upconvert totally in the software based on your settings.

Both products work with 24p or 24pa footage only not 60i.

Yeah that is what I figure. I guess I'm not looking to really "match" the footage from the HVX but more so make the edits less jarring so to speak. This is one shoot of many. All of the subsequent shoots will be on the HVX.

Based off some limited testing -

24P - Cinelook - Low Gain

I'll letterbox the footage in FCP after the shoot. Perhaps look into uprezing.
