Settings Need User Button?

Hello Folks,

I ordered a 300 today (I'm out of my league I know) and am surprised by what I read here and in the manual.

For many functions it would seem you have to assign a button before you can change it. That is, you cannot change it from the menu.

Really?

If so, I am surprised there is not much grousing about that in a Pro camera.

As many of you are probably aware, in the still camera world this is never the case. At least that I have seen. I have a Nikon D700 which has MANY settings. All of them that are not already on a physical switch or nob are settable via the menu system. And some of the physical controls can be programmed to do things other than their defualt.

Please tell me it ain't so!

Thanks,
Robert

It is so. And I agree it's not an ideal situation, but it's really not as big an issue as you might think. There are 3 user buttons. I assign commonly used features (waveform monitor, audio level magnification, etc.) to 2 of them and leave the main user button as one that can be reassigned according to a menu option (flash band compensation, etc.).

Again, not ideal but it works. I'm not sure why you have to assign some functions to a button before they work via a menu setting. Perhaps a firmware upgrade can address this...?

Thanks and Good Grief,

I should stop being surprised but I still am at hardware and software manufacturers lack of user interface understanding. Most of them should be sentenced to work for Steve Jobs. The panny lady said something about running out of memory, maybe that's the deal. If so, they should retrofit all 300's free of charge with more memory and a firmware upgrade. I once worked for a large software company and was astonished by some of the things I saw. I said so on a mailing list that included the product managers and was not popular after that. I have used almost all OS's for small computers and many devices so I have some knowledge/experience with this.

Anyway, thanks for the reply,
Robert

maybe they can double or even tripple the number of user buttons by a double or tripple fast push of each userbutton (it is just a software change, i think:huh:
