Settings in camera for upscaling to 720p

Hi everyone

I start shooting a rather large project on the UK trials bike scene next week and need some advice. So far I have been very happy with my DVX100B's performance and have not needed to upscale. However this project requires some extra quality as it will really be a labor of love. For now I'm not going to worry about the process of upscaling. However it would be really helpful to know what in camera settings are best to compliment the upscaling process. I assume squeeze mode, 25p (pal), thin, and working between f4.8 to f11 is the way to go? Is there anything else that will compliment the upscaling process later?

Thanks in advance.

If you turn the detail level down to -2 or -3 it helps reduce aliasing, which is always important when upscalling, also by turning up the v detail, it can increase percieved sharpness without pixellating your footage, cant remember exactly how it works but theres a good explanation in barry greens dvx book. a bit of detail corring also helps to reduce noise which can ruin upscaled footage. you allegedly get a better upscale by shooting in 4.3 and reframing in post, but for all the extra effort this requires i'd just stick with squeeze.

personally, if i know im shooting something for 720p output i approach the whole shoot diffrently; ie try avoid shots with lots of little details, go for a soft focus/ shallow dof look in a lot of shots, and shoot early in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower to get a more strongly defined contrast range in the pictures, and most importantly avoid overexposure and blown highlights as much as possible. obviously i cant tell you how to shoot your project, but i found that doing these things have helped me a lot in the past.

Really, really helpful! Thanks so much for the tips. The shooting in the morning and late afternoon is great advice! It's something that wouldn't have even crossed my mind!
