Settings from existing footage...

Ok, Im pretty sure the answer is no, but Im desperate, so I'll ask anyway.

I shot a music video and took about 9 scenes. After reviewing the footage (through a TV), I noticed that the first 8 scenes looked very "regular DV-ie" - but right before I shot the last scene (embarassingly enough), I was loosening the "tighness" bar on the tripod and the camera jerked forward 90 degrees and hit the tripod. The "jerk" must of changed the settings in the camera, because it suddeny looked different in the viewfinder. But I didnt try to change the settings back, because it looked cool and interesting. Well, while reviewing the footage on the TV, that last scene looked so incredible! It looked like million dollar Hollywood footage, and completely crushed the first 8 scenes!

So my question, finally, is - is there anyway to determine the settings that were used on a scene off of a particular tape? I wish I knew the exact settings for that one scene - Ive tried SOOOOOO many different settings and just cant get it to look the same...

I know someone will inquire - I aways use 24p on a DVX100b...

Any help is appreciated...

Nobody knows if the settings info is "written" into the tape along with the filmed footage?? - or if the camera can detet the settings off of the tape?

No, the settings are not "written" into the tape. Have you checked your settings since then? unless someone changed them around, they should still be the same, right?

And just for the record, I highly doubt that the "jerk" off the camera caused the scene settings to change. It's nearly impossible. On the other hand, it is possible (and happens all the time) that the dial was switched by accident and the settings on one mode were dramatically different than another, thus giving you the "hollywood" look you see.

What mode did you shoot in? 24P? 24PA?

Open your clips in cinema tools (if you're on a mac) and analyze each clip to check for framerate. If one is different than the other, you know the dial got switched...

That is exactly what happened, and it was definately not the dial on the back that "turned".

I switched the settings around since shooting, so the settings are unfortunately not still set.

The frame rates are the same 23.96.

The one different scene is very much more brighter though - do you think the "preset" switch is what got changed when it fell forward?? Maybe from A to B or A to PRSET, or something lke that? Could that have changed the texture of the look THAT much??

Dunno, man. But if it's gone, it's gone. The preset you're talking about is the white balance, so I doubt it's that... I'd need to see it to tell. Maybe the gain if it got considerably brighter?

Post a screen grab of each scene, and someone MAY be able to tell if it was a simple gain or white balance that threw it off.

There are some basic settings that are recorded to the tape as meta-data. Exposure, white balance, 24p mode, etc. If you have full displays on and play back the tape on the DVX in VCR mode, the settings should show on the LCD display.

What does "have full displays on" mean??

I don't have my camera with me, but I believe there are settings in the menu, maybe under display settings, for how much info gets shown on the screen. You turn it all on and the display gets a little crowded, but at least it'll tell you what you need to know. Yeh, it's the CAMERA DATA setting. Also set OTHER DISPLAY to ALL. Possibly press the MODE CHK button during playback for full info.

Great suggestions. Let us know if it works, and I'll stand corrected.

Yes, it does show the info... but unfortunately it doesnt completely help me. It appears that, since I had the Camera Data setting set to partial instead of full when I recorded, it only shows the gain and iris value. Now that I have the camera data setting set to full, when Im in regular shooting mode (not vcr mode) ALL of the settings come up on the lcd.

Damn, I thought I almost had those settings! Thanks for the help and knowledge you did provide though - and the effort...

I meant the Other Diplay was set to partial... and the camera data was set on on...

The Mode Check button is just a quick way of bringing up the Other Display settings...
