settings for shooting action sports

i was talking to a friend who uses a hvx200 and he said he shoots 24pn. I was thinking of shooting the same thing but here is where the confusion comes in. When im shooting 24pn what is the slow motion like?
he also said to put the frame rate 30-60.

i want to be able to have regular motion and slow motion.

i guess im totally confused with all of this. could someone help me out

If you set the record format for 24pN, then select the frame rate (in synchro scan menu) to 30fps or 60 fps, then when you drop your 30 or 60 fps footage into the timeline that has a timebase of 24fps (23.98) your footage will be slowed down. You will also not record any audio other than when your framerate is 24fps (or set at default). If you set synchro scan to 12 fps, for example, then when dropped into a 24fps timeline, your footage will play back at twice the speed (still with no recorded audio). For normal 24pN footage played back at 24fps, just change the synchro scan framerate back to default (or 24fps). You can drop all of these variable framerate footage clips into the 24fps timeline, and they will either play back at 24fps with audio, or slower or faster without audio. Hope that makes sense.

EDIT 3-16-10: See my correction later in this thread regarding synchro scan versus frame rate menu selection.

When I'm shooting things that I can't do twice (like skiing big lines in fresh snow), I shoot 48fps with no shutter. (IE: wide open)

That way I can either play clips back in real time or half speed. Even at a 180 shutter, playing back things shot at 48fps then conforming them back to 'normal' speed (throwing away half the frames, you get really bad strobing. Just make sure your pans are spot on.

I shoot snowboarding and we all use 30pn. 24pn can produce strobing in fast pans and it sucks for slow motion. Maybe just try a test shooting both settings and see which one you like the best.

alright. so if i shot 30pn with 60 frames a second would that only produce slow motion or is there someway i can have 30np 60 fps with regular motion

you would only shoot 60fps if you wanted slow motion. otherwise you would shoot 30 or 24, depending on what setting you have it on.

You cannot change fps during a shot. The HPX doesn't have speed ramping. Does any one know if there is software out there that will remove frames, ie, I shoot 60fps 24pn, and strip it down so it only plays every other frame, Or 1 frame every 60 etc.

ok so i would manual have to change it each shot? or would if i took the 60fps dropped it into a 60fps composition and then dragged that comp. into a 30? would it be in regular motion then?

Any time you double playback speed, half the frames are dropped.

Any rate under 60fps can strobe if you're not careful panning slower than normal and 24pN when overcranked produces some pretty good slo-mo in my opinion.

EDIT FROM EARLIER POST ON THIS THREAD : I mentioned using synchro scan menu to adjust frame rate and that was incorrect. It is adjusted via the actual FRAME RATE menu item. Sorry if it caused any confusion.

You wouldn't wanna film at 60fps all the time anyway, it takes up lots of space, especially when your shooting action sports and your not near a computer. With 30pn you can have a less of a chance of strobing and if you decide to do slow motion in post then you have more options, just my thinking.

Edits with too much slow-mo can be painfully slow for today's short attention spans, even if the imagery is excellent. I expect you'll want to shoot a mix of frame rates, biased towards normal speed or a slight overcrank.
In which case, I highly recommend setting up Scene Files for your different frame rates. It is WAY faster to hit the Scene File knob than to go into the menu system and change the frame rate setting.

ok thats a video that i made with the hvx200 with 720 60p and if you watch it in HD you can see that grain all over. Could someone help me out with that? because that is what im trying to fix

Does it look like that when played back in camera or have you played back to an external monitor to check it? That looks like compression artifacts to me or a possible encoding problem.
