Settings for "Home Makeover"

I know that Extreme Home Makeover doesn't use the DVX in its production, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips to what settings I should use to get that type of look.

I dont think people (at least me) dont know what "look" you are talking about. It looks like any other live show that shoots outside to me. I do know for the handheld stuff where Ty or the other team members are shooting that those are whatever sony's latest and greatest dv handycam. This time last year I watched them use an hc96 (i think...). Just what part of the "look" are you trying to replicate? Maybe try turning off everything that has to do with any film look. That will get you started. And shoot outside on sunny days?

I will be doing a similar styled video which will include shooting the work, and the sit down interviews. There won't be any POV cameras. The interview parts, to me, look filmish or maybe 30p. The "work" shooting looks like straight 60i, with some cc'ing. Just wanted to see if anyone had done anything similar and had any tips.

Hey
I did some shooting for "Flip that House" on TLC recently and the company producing the show sent me the following set up for the DVX.
Detail Level -4
V Detail Level 0
Detail Coring 0
Chroma Level 0
Chroma Phase 0
Color Temp 0
Master Ped -5
A. Iris Level -3
Gamma CINELIKE
Knee AUTO
MATRIX CINELIKE
Skin Tone Dtl ON
V Detail Freq THICK
Progressive 24P

Hope that gets you close to what you want

Hey, Hector:

Thanks for sharing those. Been gathering some settings to share as well. I've mentioned elsewhere that there really should be a 'sticky' for settings as people {including myself} are always looking for them to try out.

Regarding the 'Flip that House' list, it seems like a fairly straightforward set-up for reality-based TV. They don't trust the auto iris with highlights much (-3) but feel safe with the AUTO knee protection. Pedestal's pretty conservative and safe @ -5. They want nothing to do with messing with the chroma. I guess a lot of talking heads calls for turning on the Skin Detail. Also, THICK makes sense for TV broadcast.

I realize I'm stating the obvious, just interested in discussing settings I guess.

Thanks and good luck!

What you said is actually very interesting, I wouldn't really have picked up on those things.

Try not to second-guess yourself (Though I do it all the time - I'm a hypocrite)

The crew from Extreme Home Makeover was just in town last week and I saw them here last year too filming a house. I am not sure exactly what camera they are using but I could tell it was like a DigiBeta camera if not a Varicam or Sony F900 HD camera. Several guys running around handheld and one with it on his stedicam.

Just FYI for anyone, the knee will not have any effect in the settings he was using because of the CINELIKE gamma. It shuts the knee off completely.

I know a couple of shows similar to this were shooting with straight up Sony Betacams a couple years ago.

Hey
I was shooting B- Roll for the show. The main part of the show that they shot here in Richmond was done on a SDX900. In this big packet of info they sent me, they list the settings for only the SDX900 and the DVX100a.

Hey
I know one of the camera men that was doing the main part of the show and he sent my name in to the production office in Cali. He doesnt own a DVX so he couldnt do it unless he rented one.
I work for a videography/production company called altair, but this was freelance.

Thanks for sharing these settings.

It's adding much to the community!

I enjoy using a HIGH gamma, LOW knee, -13 ped for a dramatic look.
