Settings For FIREWORKS

I am going to attempt to get some footage of fireworks this 4th of July for the first time with the DVX100B. Not sure on the "optimal" settings or presets that would make them look good on camera as far as the coloring and frame rate.

I have figured out that a tripod, and using manual settings for focus and iriis are the biggest key. But, beyond this I am not sure.

Thanks

Without knowing what you are shooting them for (firework commerical/doc/film/etc), I'd say shoot 1/24th (again, I'm assuming you're shooting in 24p), bring the M-ped down a bit, up the saturation, no gain, WB might be an issue (you could call up the firework company and learn a bit about the chemicals they are using and go from there), maybe bring the detail up just a touch. I've yet to shoot fireworks, so, I'm just thinking out loud.

I would want high colors and probably master pedestal around -3 or -4 so your sky looks very black. Right when the show starts, set it to auto iris until it sets to a good F-Stop thenlock it by going into manual iris. As for frame rate I would probably go anywhere from 60 to 250 at 60i. For focus set it to infinity. I would probably set it to the 3.2k preset for white balance and if it looks weird, then try the 5.6k preset.

I wouldn't do slow shutter because it might blur too much together. Instead I might slow it down in post or add a bluring filter so you have more control.

Last year I was screwing around with my wife's el cheapo digital point-and-shoot in video mode and wound up with some really impressive footage of a fireworks show. Go figure.
