settings for dvrack.

Ok, got a new DVX( thanks Rush), got DVRack - and I'm stuck.
I;ve tried all kinds of settings for "DV CONTROL" and I cant seem to get more than a 5 sec clip on DVrack. I'm must be missing the concept here in a big way.

What I want to do is record to my laptop with DVrack, no tape in the DVX. I dont care if I need to start/stop recording on the DVX or from DVrack.
Can anyone give an idea of what "DV CONTROL" should be set to and how you stop/start recording? I would be ever so thankful...

You can't, yet. You have to start recording on DV Rack, not on the camera, if you don't have a tape in.

They're working on a fix for that.

Controlling an external device (like a tape deck) works fine with no tape in, but devices like the FireStore and DV Rack don't have the protocol quite "down". I believe both companies are working to fix that.

Neal,
Barry is correct that DV Rack will not begin recording in slave to the camera unless there's a tape in it. You should be able to record clips of any length by hitting Record on the DV Rack side. The problem you're having with recording terminating at about 5 seconds could be caused by several conditions:
* If running on a laptop, the CPU may be throttled back for power conservation. Check the General Tab of the System Properties dialog (Start>Settings>Control Panel>System). This can cut CPU speed by up to three-quarters, reducing a system that's well within spec to being far below par. I believe you disable the CPU throttle through the Power Settings dialog. Incidentally, some laptops remain on reduced CPU even after plugging into AC--you have to reboot to get them to run full-bore.
* Check _Memory Usage_ on the Advanced Tab of the Performance Options dialog (accessed through the Advanced Tab of System Properties dialog). If its set to System Cache, switch it to Programs. A note on this front: it seems that something can cause this setting to silently revert back to System Cache. We don't know why, or what you can do to keep this from happening.
* If your video card driver is more than about 6 months old and a newer version is available, update it. We know of several instances where old drivers caused recording to terminate.

Please let us know if any of these steps resolve this problem.

thanks Mark, turns out by installing the official demo version all my recording problems are fixed.
