Settings for direct to DVD feature

Saturday I start shooting a faith based feature that will most likely end up on DVD rather than theater screens. Now comes the decision of settings: 1080 or 720? 24 or 30fps? What scene files?

I have pretty much decided on using a scene file that allows for the most latitude in post rather than trying to create a look in the camera. What settings would you suggest?

24 frames or 30, considering it will be on DVD?

If I shoot 720 I can probably go all day without dumping my 32 gig card. 1080
and I dump once (lost some footage once when hastily dumping). Is the rez difference even worth it?

Thanks for any input.

Definitely 24, especially for DVD. And if you're aiming for only DVD, you can certainly get by just fine with 720/24pN mode.

Thanks Barry, just curious as to why you say 24fps, ESPCIALLY for DVD. Is that to ensure it has a film look? You or anyone have a scene file suggestion
for basic setting to provide most latitude in post ? (primarily interiors, brightly and mostly evenly lit comedy/drama).

DVDs have always been able to store native 24p files. If you shoot your project on 24p, the DVD player will support it, and international dvd players will almost certainly support it as well. And because it's shot at 24p, and recorded/stored progressive, it'll play excellently on a progressive-scan TV. And you'll either be able to fit 20% more footage on the disc, or use a lower compression ratio for higher quality footage.

Now, if you're not going for the film look, ignore all that. But if you wanted a film-looking end product, 24p not only makes sense, it makes a lot more sense when mastered to DVD.

Doesn't matter; all footage will be recorded at zero. The 0/7.5 thing is an issue for analog output to a monitor, but it won't affect your recorded footage at all.
