Settings for 7Q DNG and Resolve 11

I didn't shoot RAW for months and was surprised to see that the settings I used with Resolve 10 in the earlier version don't work at all? 1) ACES 2) Camera RAW: Cinema DNG - Decode Using: Project - White Balance: As Shot - Color Space: BMD Film - Gamma: BMD Film - Highlight Recover: Check 3) Exposure +2.5 4) No LUT

What did I miss? Any suggestions for settings?

hey buddy, im working on this workflow my self with converting DNG files to (Edius HQX codec) then exporting to AAF. Import AAF into resolve to use ACES and then back into Edius.

Im using resolve lite 11. i noticed that DNG is not on the IDT list on resolve lite. so im gonna experiment with BMDfilm which i think is DNG and sony slog2.

Do u have the full version of resolve?

Thanks,
Chris

Hello--

Found this in an FS-700 User Group on Facebook. Supposedly this Resolve workflow in the go to for the new 3.1 firmware. Unknown as to why.

As of late, I've started using a Gretag MacBeth color chart on my shoots; importing it with the footage, then using Resolve 11's color chart calibration feature. No LUTs, no ACES. It's beginning to boil down to a "standard" set of GM exposures that fit standard lighting conditions: dawn, noon, dusk, incandescent. My results are almost always a good base to start from, before I do color grading.

Hey Clermond,

I did a test today and I use the same settings as you on Resolve 11 and the 4K RAW and 4K4UHD (Or whatever it's called) look pretty similar. Close enough anyways.

I ran another test, but ACES does not work at all, also not with DNG from BMD Pocket Camera. I have no idea where the hook is.
Both 4K2HD and 2KRAW were exposed the same within 2 minutes,
35mmCP.2, f=3.0, WB 5400K, Felloni D50 as fill beside the camera.

If you're going to try ACES I'd go for the slog2 IDT as it seems to work better (for 4K to pro res) or the 709 IDT. (For Raw) although it has been a while since I tried grading anything myself.

The above 709 setting I think looks play, albeit a bit too saturated (as you can see when compared to the colour match). Have you tried A/Bing the images to see what the colour match is doing? Does it look like it is just pulling some saturation or is it adjusting colours too?

I am gonna check the IDT if I am home from my current trip. Thanks for the hint, Collin.

For my impression color match is adjusting the colors too. Look at the red in the third field from left above the grey. It's still a little yellow/orange in the unmatched image.

i've been converting a lot lately... that's what i used - worked perfectly.

- DAVINCI YRGB or ACES
- DECODE USING: CLIP
- WB: AS SHOT
- COLOR SPACE: BMD FILM
- GAMMA:BMD FILM
- CONTRAST: -50
- HL RECOVERY
- EXPOSURE: +3

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I still try to find out why I have this unusable ACES

Try using the Sony Raw IDT. I was grading something I shot early this year in 4K Raw and was using that set up and it looked okay (admittedly I was grading the hell out of it so it was in no way whatsoever reflective of what looks 'natural') but it might work as a starting point I'll see if I can dig up a raw frame with a Colour chart tomorrow and post some thumbnails.
