Setting up to view on a TV

I would like to set up FCP to send a preview to a TV monitor. I have a G5 (which of course has the dual display capabilities) and would like to know what the best way to set that up is. The TV does not have s-video. Is there an adapter I can get for the computer? Thanks!

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

You can go firewire out to another camera or to your DVX and then RCA it into your TV...I do this with another camera...it works great, just like a preview monitor..

Unless you have a DVI in on your TV you really can't go into it using your existing video card. Really only DLP's and Plasma's along with LCD TV's have this capability...if you have one with this input hook it up and see out it looks :)

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

Using the 'External Video' option in FCP is pretty much only possible via firewire. Therefore, you would need on of the following:

1)DV Camera that can do D/A passthrough (most consumer DV cams have this feature)
2)DV deck with firewire input and analogue output
3)D/A converter

With any of these, you will be able to successfully preview your work out of FCP on a broadcast monitor, normal television, or pretty much anything that takes an analogue input. The fact that your g5 has a dual display capability is really of no use here (except for previewing to another computer monitor, which kinda defeats to purpose of previewing your work to a separate monitor).

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

You have a choice with your G5, either you can set up two monitors, or with the second output you can buy an adapter for about $30 from apple that will convert the signal to a composite video signal.

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

I have a client that has a G5 with dual displays.
Can I add a PCI X card with a VGA out (or DVI) and then put the composite adapter on that?
Will FCP see the additional video carD?

Thanks

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

should not be a problem, all the computer needs is another video card to suport the video out, your towers processor will have no problems at all. I use a sony analog/dv breakout box, along with two 19" monitors.

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

Use your camera, plug firewire into computer and A/V cables from cam into TV. Then make sure you tell FCP in settings that you're doing just that. It's easy and simple.

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

well this customer does not want to use his camera to display FCP output. We want to set up his 17" and 23" flatscreen for timeline/browser etc, and use a third card to display out to an NTSC monitor. I'll have to research what card to use.

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

The only way to get reliable video preview to a broadcast monitor from FCP is via Firewire. If you don't want to go through the camera, then you need to get a digital/analog converter. It's a little box that accepts both firewire (digital) and analog connections and converts between the two. It's basically doing the same thing that most any dv camera would do.

Canopus' ADVC-100 (link) is one of the more popular A/D converters

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

true. thanks for that heads up.
If you didn't know, Final Cut Pro HD can now preview out through to an HD monitor or regular 'ol tv with the Audio/Video settings. The picture is quite nice. In fact, when I choose a second monitor for output, it looks as good or almost as good as firewire. That is my new love for FCP HD; the ability to output video via DVI, VGA, Composit, or S-Video.

This works for G5's only. According to the Apple site.

Is there an option, like this, for MDD G4's?

Re: Setting up to view on a TV

I've always used my deck... NOT the camera. I hate plugging/unplugging ANYTHING from that unless I have to. The deck just sits there on my desk anyway. My deck has outs for the TV and I just run through that.

Good luck,
