sorry but I gotta wow a friend tommorrow and I don't have time to test. I just received this camera a couple of hours ago and boy is it a beauty
So far I have set:
Gamma: cine like v
Matrix: cine like
Progressive: 24p (or a)

Anything else not listed hasn't been touched and is a factory setting...well except for the white balance
any help would be much appreciated

One other question...sortta off topic, sorry, but I got the 16:9 conversion lens as well. Now if I shoot in this aspect ratio and then burn it on dvd -- will it have that matted but sort of stretched look that anamorphic dvd's have when displayed on a regular t.v.

One other thing: This has got to be the best message board out there -- very helpful and infomative -- the person who came up with this message board is a GENIUS! !!! There's no trolls, flamers, ect.

Would that that were really true . . .

But it's usually pretty tranquil. The Moderators do a great job.

For the wow factor, your settings are fine, but mind your light and exposure.

How your footage appears on your TV depends on how you edit and  burn it.  If you do it all correctly, your DVD player will automatically letterbox it.

I'd probably vote that, depending on the look you're going for, you might want to boost chroma level a little (maybe +2 or +3), drop the Master Ped a few notches (-5 or so) and if you're doing a manual white balance, set the COLOR TEMP to -1 or -2 to "warm up" the image. Then set the lens on Z99 and the iris on f/2.8 to get the shallowest DOF.

Thanks david, and thanks for all the technical details barry – just what I needed. Just one question, barry, what is chroma, what does it look like. More specifically what does chroma level and chroma phase do?
Also, I know that I shoud put the detail level down a little bit to take that videoish edge off but what about dtl coring…what does this do?
Oh and what about knee? How could I further tweek this for a more filmic look?

It's all covered in the guide that I'm writing/DVD I'm producing. In short, chroma level is the amount of color saturation, chroma phase is like a tint control, detail coring helps control noise, and the knee controls the camera's response to overexposure.

thenks for your reply...I'm basically looking for the filmic look by optimizing these controls and details on this. If your guide covers all the details then when's it coming out and where can I get it?

And btw, will your content cover both the dvx100 classic and "A" in equal detail? I have the "A" ... hence my curiosity?

There's extensive coverage of the 100, and then whole sections on what's new with the "A". I did a section that covers some looks you can create with the camera, and I used only 100 settings on that so users of both cameras can replicate the looks (plus the image controls in the 100A don't really add any drastic amount of control, but that Detail Coring sure is nice...)

I just wanted to say that I tried the following today:

Opened my iris, set the ND filter to 1/64 (I was outside), and focused manually on a subject (A 4 ft stuffed SPiderMan, since my daughter wouldn't sit still), set the camera to 24P and letterboxed it. I was amazed at how "cinematic" it looked. It might have been the fact that Spidey was in the shot, since he's a big star these days. But narrowing the DOF in addition to using the progressive mode and throwing in the letterbox for psychological effect was incredible. Very simple steps to achieve the look I bought the camera for.
