Hi: Maybe it was too many Blue Moons on Memorial Day but I'm lost and need a little help please. I have a shoot for a European client next week and the specs are:
720p 50 (PAL Format) P2 with AVC Intra-100 1280x720. Can someone please detail the menu settings for PAL 720p 50.
TIA,
Jim

Hi Jim,

What camera are you using? If you have a USA HPX300 PAL is not available. It can be modified by Panasonic. How are you delivering the footage? If it's raw Intra files that's a problem. I've done some 24p to 25p conversions out of FCS that were fine.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Yes it's the USA HPX300. I'm uploading the clips (one minute green screen testimonials) to their FTP. The clients Data format request is: Apple "Prores422“ with 10bit (4:2:2 for Chromakey) -or- P2 with AVCIntra(100MBs).

Oh, and by the way, the camera model is the AG-HPX300P. Also, if I have to rent a PAL camera- are there any models that you may have used and recommend?

The HPX370 is PAL compatible but the HPX300 without a mod from Panasonic is not. The HPX301E and HPX371E both also have PAL and NTSC capability.

Also check if they mean 50p or 25p as both options are available at 1280x720p, as you say they need AVC Intra 100 or the native P2 files re-wrapped as pro res HQ in final cut pro.

You will also need to set a shutter speed of 1/50th (180 degrees) and it may be that they need the camera profile set up for BBC spec which can be found here: http://thebrownings.name/WHP034/pdf/WHP034-ADD38_Panasonic_HPX301.pdf

If you need any further help or advice re PAL settings please do ask as I am happy to help.

Note you may see some flicker from certain lights as the USA mains frequency is 60hz and this can cause problems with our PAL 25fps system

BTW, I just spoke with Panasonic and they do offer the PAL upgrade for $800.00, which Japan needs to authorize and ship the software to the US where the upgrade is performed.

Hmmm $800 is a lot for one job and silly that panasonic didn't make all the 300 cameras include it like they have with the 301/370.

I wonder if you update the 300 firmware with the 301 firmware if it adds the option, but maybe as you say it needs a lot more to be uploaded and it is always best to respect the warranty aspects of this.

FYI I did my first NTSC job this year and the skew and cmos problems at 24p or 30p were far worse than the camera shows in PAL at 25p.

Remember that having PAL capability adds value to your service. Not to step on Gary's territory, one EU client can lead to another. Think tax deduction! If you have the time and you can afford it... do it!
