Hello I don';t know where to post but maybe yall can help me. I have to build a simple white room with a door and a metal grate in the wall painted to match. What should I use to build this.
I have to build a set that is basically just a white room with some metal look grates painted to match. I dont know what to use. FOAMCORE/PLYWOOD:dankk2:
grates? how big are the cells on the grates? Are we talking about really small or large? Where do the grates go? On the walls? Maybe a bit more explanation or do you have a photo of something similar you're trying to match?
Ok The set is a blank room (white) with one door, an opening where a very small room has a toilet (think greyhound bus toilet) and the grates are more or less to just break up the wall and make it a little more interesting. I really need help on how i should go about constructing the walls. This shoot is where thes four people are trapped so it needs to portray the fact that it is solid and the people can't simply kick the door down or get through the wall.
Depending on the grid size you want--Foam insulation board.
You get the blue stuff at around 2 inches thick and layer and cut it with a hot wire or knife, then sand paper it.
You can coat it with white glue and then attach it to the wall.
But cut it outside--or with a respirator--- extremely toxic vapors.
You can also coat it with resin after you seal it with white glue to make it stronger.
If you can't find a location that matches your set needs. The next best thing is to modify an exsisting area to suit your needs. Perhaps ad the metal grate.
If no exsisting set is available, then you will need to build the walls yourself. Build them as you would any real wall, except you only need to build one side:
Frame out your walls with 2x4s, and then drywall one side and paint it normally. There is of course no need for insulation or sheetrocking the "back" of the walls.
Framing and mounting a door will require a little more, especially if you want it to actually open. Finding/hiring a builder/joiner to help you out would be a good thing.
Maybe you can build only a wall or two to modify an exsisting set location.
If you arn't shooting the ceiling, then there is no need to build it - otherwise look into similar construction tecniques as with teh walls, but be sure to including some structure to support the ceiling (supporting walls & beams, etc..)
Be sure to secure everything very well. Angle-iorn corner brackets will hold your wall "flats" together, and mounting to exsisting building elements can help. Sandbags & stage weights at the bottom of a wall are comon too.
Dude. Enough double posting! I just spent 10 mintues answering your thread in the Cinematography area, where you even ask "why hasn't anyone responded?" as you make your cross post here.
The ONLY reason that I'm not deleting BOTH threads is beacuse of the time that memebers have taken to answer the questions for you and the good information that has been shared.
ok bud i really appreciate the replies. and I am sorrry for the double post. I was not getting a respone in the cinematography so I replied there and also created the thread here. SORRY IF IT CAUSED ANY INCONVENIENCE I wont do it again.
I was an IA carpenter for a few years. If you have to build walls, you'll want to do so using the method described here. Once you construct the walls, use zip screws and fender washers to add the expanded metal grating to the surface. Just up out of frame in the upper corners and down below into the 1x4 rails.
