hi,

i'm planning on using tascam dr-100 and was wondering if anybody knows if i can use this cable (typically
for zoomh4) to go into GH2:

Sescom LN2MIC-ZMH4-GH1 2.5mm Line to Mic Cable

sescom does a tascam cable (sescom LN2MIC-TASDR100). but it seems like it's more designed for the canon dslr's.

any advice on which i should get?

thanks.

goro,

You will need different amounts of attenuation for Zoom (25dB) versus Tascam (35dB).

For that reason, I use a Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N with the Zoom H1, and a LN2MIC-TASDR100 with the Tascam DR-40.

I have to use a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter with both of these cables because of Panasonic's decision to use a non-standard 2.5mm external mic input jack (instead of the standard 3.5mm jack that Canon and everyone else uses).

I would not need an adapter if I had bought a LN2MIC-ZMH4-GH1 with a 2.5mm jack for my Zoom, but wanted the 3.5mm option in case I switch to Canon, Nikon or Sony someday.

That said, the LN2MIC-ZMH4-GH1 is a 25dB cable and doesn't provide enough attenuation for the Tascams.

Sescom doesn't make a LN2MIC-TASDR100-GH1 (yet), so you'll have to buy the LN2MIC-TASDR100 plus an adapter (I strongly recommend the Hosa GPM-467 right angle adapter. The cable doesn't stick out as far as with straight adapters, and the right angle reduces the potential for stress on the camera input because of the reduced length of the' lever arm' acting on the camera).

Hope this is helpful,

Bill

ps...how is the dr40? i wanted to get that, but read a lot of negative reviews about the 'helicopter' noise.
are you finding this noise as well?

What would happen if we used the LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N to the Tascam Dr-100 (25db)?

Would the sound be softer or what? Because I just ordered that cable from 3.5mm to 2.5mm and I'm thinking of returning it now.

I love the DR-40. I get no helicopter noise - just perfect recordings. Hard to pass up 4 track sound and XLR inputs for $61 more than I paid for my Zoom H1 a year ago (with the 15% discount that Amazon is offering right now).

The reviews I've seen are very positive:

As B&H says here, "If you're looking for features like separate headphone and line-level outputs, an included rechargeable battery and wireless remote and four built-in microphones, you're going to have to go with the popular Tascam DR-100. But if you're on a tight budget and you need a recorder that can connect to professional equipment and create high-resolution recordings, the new DR-40 is a sweet new option."

Hope this is helpful,

With less attenuation from the Zoom cable, the Tascam's output will be hotter - so, if you're not careful with peaks, you risk burning out the preamps in your GH2.

There's less risk of this with the Zoom cable than with using a standard cable with zero attenuation, but I wouldn't risk it.

I'd send the cable back and get the LN2MIC-TASDR100.

Cheers,

Bill

thanks bill.

you convinced me to go for the DR-40....and hopefully saved me some $$ in the process.

You're not going to "burn out" the preamps on a camera if you send it an audio signal that's too hot. If an audio signal is too hot, the only thing that's going to happen is the audio that you record into the camera will distort and sound bad on playback. Your preamps will still be intact and nothing will burn.
