Seriously, why does HVX200 noise look like film grain?

I, and a number of others before me, have noticed that HVX200 noise appears to look a lot more like film grain than the noise of other HD cameras. This struck me especially when i was looking at some of my own footage and for a split second forgot I was looking at digital and thought to myself, "I wonder how much more grain in those shadow areas would have been added if I'd push processed this." Yes this was just a simple mental slip but it doesn't change the fact to me that the HVX noise really looks like film grain to me. Is there any technical reason why the HVX noise would look more like film grain than that of other HD cameras or am I simply biased an wearing HVX-colored beer goggles?

I agree. Especially when it has been colour corrected to appear more film like, the resemblance to earlier 16mm film stock is very pronounced.

I think it has to do with the Panny color matrix, not the grain. You are reacting to the color, not the grain. I have noticed the same thing with Vari footage shot with film settings. Grain is generally not good but at times cannot be avoided. I think it also helps that the HVX is not quite as sharp as other HD cameras, sharpness make grain look more digital...

The HVX has more of a pronounced chroma noise than the other cameras. It can feel like a fast Fuji stock when shot a certain way.

Similar to the DVX but the DV codec just made it nasty, the "B" was a nice improvement though. You are correct though, most the noise is chroma noise that increases with the cine gammas...
