Serious malfunction of the EVF

I picked up my AF101 out of the camera bag and discovered the EVF and to some extent power management in the camera had gone bad. Everything that's under about 45% exposure is red in the EVF and after a short time with power on, with a fully charged battery, the battery indicator began to flash telling me it was only a few minutes left. This with two different batteries.

The attached image is how the EVF looks with red areas with parts exposed lower than about 45%. It's not peeking or focus in red and I've init the camera to bring back the original settings. I had a shoot two days ago and everything worked fine then. It was indoors and not in a humid or hot environment.

I have the camera without the battery attached now to see if it will recover but it looks like I will have to send it in.

And it gets worse if you hook it up with the PSU. Red and green streeking:

Yikes! Looks like a nightmare sequence from a bad movie! :undecided

Definitely time to send it in- keep us posted, and good luck!

I put the battery back in to try again and I discovered where the fault is. If I put pressure on the part of the EVF that's closest to the body, it's where the EVF narrows to make it possible to swivel, the red and green streeking goes away. It's rather soft plastics so I don't use any excessive force just a gentle pressure. The advantage of having worked with electronics before to fix them can be handy sometimes!

So it seams it's the EVF that has to be the malfunctioning part. I can still shoot with the camera and the footage will look great.

A couple of months ago I remember seeing something similar on another AF camera on dvxuser?

Hi,

I don't recall anoth post by another user with a similar problem, and I can appreciate that you have "eliminated" things that are not at fault. However since it is still under warranty, why not send it in to get it fixed? Your troubleshooting skills should get them closer to the repair faster.

Best,

Jan

Hi,

Since each country works differently, how does that repair order on the website work. Do they email you with an Repair Authorization number and then you send it in?

Curious in the USA,

Jan

I register the warranty issue on the website. Then they send out DHL to pick up my camera and send it to Wales for repair and then back to me. I got a RMA number and an airway bill to attach to the package.

My cameras just came back and it now shows a proper EVF without strange colours. According to the service sheet the EVF LCD was replaced. All in all it took nine days, six of them working days to fix it.

I'm glad the camera is back :)
