Serious Grain Issues

After much deliberation and browsing of various forums i've decided to shoot my projects on the z1u is c25 mode. Naturally macgregor's footage sealed the deal for me, also the fact tat a lot of my footage was going to involve fast movement, and shotting 60i would look crazy.

so,

i did a shoot 2 nights ago in a comedy club, in c25 mode at 1/50 shutter speed with cinegamma settings off and auto exposure set to slow. I captured using connect hd into vegas and automated to 25 to 24p conversion. the low light footage is sooooo poo pooing grainy. it's off the hook. I feel like this is a significant difference from shooting at 60i in lower light, but what the hell do i know? does anyone have experience with this issue on the z1u or te fx1e? i don't know what to do, and my footage looks like a fuzzbomb.

on the other hand, footage of the comedians looks great, and the c25 impressed the hell out of me.

can this grain issue be avoided internally? did i do something wrong with the camera settings?

thanks, yall

Auto exposure might have kicked in the gain controls, which can go up to +18db and adds a lot of digital noise to the picture. Personally, I'd never shoot with auto exposure or auto shutter on, even set to slow, as the resulting footage will look amateurish. Turn those auto controls off, and set your gain to 0 (or +3 at the most). Under these settings the camera's low light performance isn't great, so shooting in a darkened club without supplemental lighting will be difficult.

that makes sense....

i shouldve known it would kick in the gain. i'm an idiot. thanks.

Hello. I do not think CF25 should add any grain.

What i have tested is that Cineform codec looses quality (at least the last demo version), so i would only use it for proxy editing, and then swap files with gearshift or by hand.

Try shooting at 50i, so you can always have the chance of making slow motions.

i was shooting at 50i, but i didn't swap the m2t files and i didnt set a grain max. yeah. live and learn.

while i have your attention macgregor, im about to recieve a 35mm adaptor in the mail, and i was curious if you had any suggestions for shooting with it and the fx1...
thanks
