Serious digital break-up

Have just received the camera a few days ago - went to shoot today and at least half of the footage comes back with intermittant digital break-up - seems not to matter it it is 720P or 480I - have not tried it in 1080 - needless to say this is a major drag and a great disappointment - anyone else have a similar experience?

Sounds like you got a bad egg.. I would return that right away and demand the next camera that comes in

Does the break up happen when you view the footage on the camera or has the footage been downloaded to the editing system.

This type of thing looks more like a corrupted file than a problem with the camera. It really looks like what happens with a bad hard disk. Could be a bad P2 card as well. Try a different card or try formatting the P2 card again.

It has been downloaded to an edit system using a Mac Powerbook - I have had some problems having the card recognized when it is in the slot - I downloaded some of the footage via Firewire. It does sound like a corrupted file though...

I've had the exact same kind of thing happen with footage before. (Not from an HVX) It was a bad drive in my Mac.

This is what really worries me about P2. If this happens, there is no backup at all.

There is also this risk with tape, but it normally only affects a tiny section and is very rare with pro tape mechanisms.

Before we jump to conclusions let's hear what our original poster has to say about it playing back on the camera. That should help trouble shoot the problem.

That'll be hard if he has already deleted the footage from the card and moved on, like the work flow dictates :(

Even if the P2 card and HVX are perfect, everything else won't always be.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to everyone but I needed to do some more tests. The digital break-up was not on the camera - it was added during the transfer process. I downloaded the new software offered by Panasonic and that seemed to solve the problem. However this work flow is very scary - if I had not found out about the new software and if I had shot for a few days with out checking every frame of the footage - I would have been screwed. As it stands now I am using the five 4 gig cards - as they fill up while shooting I am popping them in the laptop and transfering them - then they go back in the camera to be formatted (which by the way is a big pain in the ass!) Needless to say once they are formatted the only copy of the footage that I have is on the laptop and if there is a problem I am stuck. I am eager to here from others how they are dealing with this work flow. Thanks for everyone's help!

What was the NEW software you downloaded ? Was it the Panasonic P2 viewer or Panasonice drivers or what ?

If you are using a Mac and Final Cut Pro 5 (as I am) you dont need the software from Panasonic. Just plug your camera into the Mac with a Firewire cable and the P2 cards will show up as icons on the desktop. Then launch Final Cut and go to the File Menu > Import > Panasonic P2 and Final Cut will copy your footage into your project.

DO NOT drag the files from the P2 cards to the Mac to copy them. Final Cut won't recognize them correctly.

I've done it and everything works great.

Welcome to the Mac.
