Sequence exporting

I thought I knew what I was doing, but perhaps not. I've been editing in FCP for a while, but I'm new to the HVX and pulling footage from it for editing. I've searched the boards and don't see anything specifically hitting this issue.

Here's the situation: For P2 storage reasons and on the recommendation of a videographer acquaintance, my wife and I recently shot fifteen dance recitals in 480/30p. The only difference between some of the files is that my wife accidentally shot some in DVCPRO 50; all the rest are in straight DV.

I logged and transferred them without drop-down, since I shouldn't have needed it, and then told the sequences I created to use the settings from the clips. I've now edited them all and put title cards on them--some black text on a white background--with some intro music, etc., and everything looks perfect in FCP.

But when I export using "Current Settings" and play the resulting Quicktime file in Quicktime Player, two things have happened:

1) The text is jagged, and at the last second on screen the three lines of text jump closer together on the vertical (it's like the leading suddenly tightens up).

2) The footage is rather blurred, has a definite stutter to it at first, and then continues with the slightest hint of slo-mo to it. I don't really see any indication of interlacing.

What's weird is that if I open the same resulting .mov file in MPEG Streamclip, it looks almost perfect: The footage is crisp, the slight slo-mo has gone away, and the text is crisp--but still occasionally jumps like it does in the Quicktime file.

What the heck is going on? Is there something I need to know about the export? Different settings I need to use?

This project is due the day after tomorrow in the afternoon, and I've got fifteen videos to export and 85 total copies to make. Any emergency help is vastly appreciated.

Thanks,

Clint

open the file in quicktime, press command J, click on Video Track, then click 'high quality'.

if this fixes your problems, press save and you're done!

hope that helps.

Upon export from FCP, make sure you check "Make Self Contained". The jumping text thing is weird. You have to turn in QT movies? What do they look like when you drop them back in FCP? What is the person you are giving these to doing with them? You might be OK...

The problem here is the 'current settings', at least in trying to understand your described result.

Since I (and no one else here) can intuit what those settings were, they could be almost anything. From the sound of it, the times I've seen this sort of behavior, is when I've exported a movie, with something that causes my computer to not be able to play the movie smoothly, like an uncompressed format, or the like.

Check to make sure the 'export' settings are something that you know to play smoothly on your system.

So a suggestion, select Mpeg-4, with H.264 and set the max data rate to about 7-10 Megabits/s should run smooth on most 'modern' computers... and at that rate for Standard Def DV, it should have few or no noticeable artifacts.

And of course mileage can vary...
