Sennheiser ME66 vs 416

I was given the K6/ME66 at work (had requested the NTG2) and while it works, it's got a very tinny sound and lacks a lot of the rich low-end that makes audio sound good.

I don't recognise this description - did you have the bass roll-off switched on by any chance?

i just got back from a pre-light for several talking head interviews i will shoot tomw and monday.

i've used several mics in the past and often the me66. i had the option to step up to the senn 416t and grab it.

i have the senn 416 on a boom, in a zepplin, just above the frame line above my seated interviewee. the interviewee is on a cushioned chair placed on a spongy rubber-mat used under carpets, on top of a sound blanket spread out on the floor as a carpet. the space is a studio with an overhead grid.

when we tested the mic this afternoon i was VERY surprised and disappointed with how boomy the senn 416 sounded. there was very little of pleasant audio i expected.

now, i know i am indoors, in a studio but would the zepplin add to the boomy-ness of the senn 416. anyone have any thoughts as to how i can bring the senn 416 to rgw level of praise that everyone seems to share?

thanks in advance to any and all who care to share.

(just hurry w/your thoughts-call time is 9 hours from now!)

be well

rob

The boominess sounds like it's coming from how you are using the mic. in the acoustic.

The windshield should not change the sound as long as it's a decent Rycote and the mic. is properly mounted and the cable properly addressed so as not to transmit handling noise to the mic. (ideally with a ConnBox to decouple it).

I cold be wrong, but it sounds like you treated the floor and not the rest of the surfaces.

That's the problem and why shotgun mics don't do a good job unless you reallu have a well damped soundstage.
