Sennheiser HD25-1 II for location sound and rough post-sound editing?

I own a pair of m50x's but I'm looking for a new pair because although the m50x's are good for sitting at my computer editing etc, they aren't fun in the field. i don't boom mix as much as I shoot but I do it once and a while and the m50x are heavy and hot.

Alex, you're in a warm climate so I assume you do ok with the sony's in the heat? Or did you modify the padding etc?

S.Blanchardon, do you use the m50x's in the field? If so did you modify or cover the pleather cushions etc?

thx guys.

Roland, Thx for the article. yeah, I kinda figured that, but was still unclear, thx for the clarification. sennheiser is still selling the old versions but bh has discontinued them and added the new models. it must've been recent since they don't have any reviews etc.

I've had no problems, and I've done more than my share of summer work in heat and humidity. My last pair, I had switched the pads to fabric aftermarket (Pearstone, I believe) pads, and I may do that with this pair soon. The pads are still in great condition, for now.

My only real complaint about the stock pads, though, is that the vinyl covering starts to break down and flake off afer a few years, leaving bits and pieces behind after being worn. So, in that respect, replacement pads are eventually a necessity. It's annoying to have to clean specks of that material out of my ears.

I ended up trying both. I'm gonna keep the hd25's. Lighter and more comfortable. I also like the suede-ish pads and inter-changeable cables. Thx guys.

Personally, I like the Garfield Softie ear pad covers on my Sony's.. 'cool in the summer, warm in the winter'. They also keep the ear pads from getting pulled off and deteriorating. The trade off: a few dBs of isolation, but worth it IMO.

+1 Great addition.

There has been no change in the HD 25 since it first came out in the late 1980's.

The only "changes" have been in the cable options and how it's packaged.

Oh - I always use the optional velour earpads with mine - they used to come in the box with the HD 25-1 II version - if they are not there in teh new version, it's easy to get them as an accessory.
