Sennheiser G4 is coming (available April)

expected from sennheiser, but the sound design on that ad spot is really good.

I was excited to see this, but now dissapointed. What exactly is new here over the G3? Looks like the 500p series is more robust/stronger signal and longer runtime.

But did they do anything to bring in the tech of the AVX digital system or Rodelink digital systems?

I'm frustrated by the wireless audio options, because on one hand you have the brilliant but limited AVX system, and then the traditional G3/G4 system with all the controls you could need, and then Rode sort of somewhere in between.

I would like to see a series that takes the best of G4/AVX and combies together:

- Ion Lithium batteries, or standard batteries
- Digital spectrum but with full manual control options
- The XLR phantom power adaptor to turn any mic wireless

With frequences dissapearring, is the G4 a good long term investment? The AVX seems more future oriented but with a lot of annoying compromises, and no XLR adaptor for any standard mic. I also think the auto features on the AVX are the bees knees and super handy, and the G series more complicated - but really, both options would be best in the same unit.

We use the all digital 6000 and 9000 ser at work and here's hoping that in time they will do an ENG version of them but I suspect it may be pricey and called the G6?

The 6000 rack receiver is already widely in use so all they need to do is a smaller receiver for camera and sound bag applications.

Looks like the 500 series will be added to the ENG lineup.

The 2000 series have long been available in ENG form factor (granted, at $1500/channel). It features a selectable RF power level from the transmitter: 10mW, 30mW, 50mW, 100mW. The 100 series are fixed 30mW, and the 300 and 500 series are selectable 10/30mW.

Just as important as diversity reception in keeping a stable signal with wireless is transmission strength. While the G3 100 work very well, and are an incredible value in the sub-$1k range, the higher transmission powers of the 2000 series are pretty fantastic. But at that price, you’re getting into the territory of Lectro... kind of a no-brainer.

Your forgot to mention Sony UWP-D11 ;-)

In my eyes the best ultra low budget wireless on the market right now.

Also a possible contender that looks interesting is Senal AWS-2000

However the product is so new there are not that many reviews or user reports out there just yet, so I haven't yet formed an opinion on it other than it is "one to watch".

The AVX was designed for non-audio folks, so there are few settings or options. The main complaints are, it has some kind of auto gain that can't be shut off and a (whopping) 19ms latency (just over a half-frame). I've never used one, but allegedly the auto gain is not annoying like the typical AGC and the latency may or may not be issue, depending on the use and user.
