Sennheiser EW 112-p G2 Still Acceptable?

I'll be filming my first wedding in about 3 weeks, and talked with an experienced videographer today, who recommended I get a wireless microphone kit to make sure I can mic the groom for the vows at least. I did a little bit of research, and I really like Sennheiser, so I looked into the G3 series. I also looked at the G2 series. Is the G2 series, as long as it's not in the 700 MHz range, still a good system? Or should I really try for the G3?

I can probably get a relatively new G2 system for $300. Is it a go?

The G2 series are no longer available other than on the used market. You are correct that as long as it's not in the 700mhz band you're fine and $300 for a good condition used G2 is a fair price. You'll prefer the ME-2 mic to the ME-4. The ME-2 is omni whereas the ME-4 is cardioid. If it doesn't come with a lav, Oscar Soundtech is doing some pretty darn good lavs for a very good price.

Be aware when buying off the used market that Sennheiser G2's are widely counterfeited in that notorious Asia country.

Keep in mind that the G3 adds diversity reception by using the output cable as the second antenna. This can be very, very useful... especially in an environment such as a wedding. Diversity helps immensely to keep dropouts to a minimum.

You could always rent a couple systems for the gig to try them out before you buy, and rental day rates aren't bad at all. A lot of the big rental houses will ship rentals to you, so if there's nobody local it's not a big deal.
