Sennheiser AVX vs Rode Rodelink? (G3 dethroned?)

Can we start saying that G3 is dethroned? Or you see some caveats in those new systems?
If not, which one is better in your eyes?

Nope.

The units in question operate, basically, on their own WiFi networks. 2.4GHz can be crowded, so in an environment where lots of folks are taking selfies and posting to InstaTwitterBook, stability falls apart. This technology is still in its infancy, and has quite a way to go before it is truly viable. It's also marketed more toward the advanced hobbyist, rather than the professional user. So, perhaps these offer a viable alternative for their target market, but there are still weaknesses any way you look at it.

I'll stick wtih my UHF diversity.

I have no experience with new systems, but the working range (100') is short and who knows how crowded the 2.4GHz block will get with more smart phones and pads everyday. Lectro's new L-series systems are still within the usual blocks.. this tells me something.

I really wish folks would get over the sports "only one winner" mentality. The G3 was never the king of anything, it was one of the better price/feature choices at the lower end of the price spectrum. There were a lot of others in that general zone.

But you don't want single dominant products anyway. You want choices with differences so you can get something that works best for how YOU use it.

Which is why the flip side of the "crowned" discussion the "XYZ Killer" is even worse as a discussion point. If you LOVE ABC the last thing you want is for ABC to drive XYZ out of the market. You want them competing, and you want an option when ABC does something that makes it unusable for you down the line.

But to answer the OP, NO. Different products for different markets.

yes and no. the problem with 2.4 are the dropouts outdoors, not the cell phones. In fact it will kill most of them in a room (still talking about the 2.4, no idea how 1.9 will behave). the other problem is that DJ and similar also use that signal even for the lights and they are strong as well and WILL interfere. In a word the 2.4 digital doesn't work well for working cameras (simply put). Anyone who actually used them could see it, unlike the reviews on-line that didn't see anything! Sennheiser will use 1.9 instead of 2.4. and that could make a difference (on paper, but ehy.. Sennheiser is Sennheiser: sure they know how to do it!). G3 in UHF works fine indoors and not so good in a big City outdoors. That's a fact. I mostly use a G3 "A" handset in nyc and I have to carry a cord and a shure ALL THE TIME because I never know.
the other problem is that Sennheiser now thinks that they are lectros (judging by the prices).
but that direct mount on the XLR port is soooooo clever...

anywho for that money sure they better work , but they have to work outside and keep the signal for more than 3ft without dropping out like the other digital system does. I am going to get one. and I'd wait for the feedback of users in the forums (like this one) instead of getting the "knowledge" from the private "reviewers" on-line (with or without connections with the distributors). After what happened with the 2.4 I'd trust them 0 in a scale between 0 and 10.
