Sennheiser AVX on sale today at B&H

FWIW due to the latency of this setup you don't want to mix use with G3 wireless units together.

interesting tidbit to note.

though so long as you're on separate channels and have it going through even a half capable editor, adjusting the sync isn't a big bother. had the same thing happen using a bluetooth unit.

Yeah I've been reading about that. I figured maybe I could use it for 1 man band simple shoots no problem.

Or use it as the only wireless but with tascam DR-10s during weddings.

Or on weddings with G3 wireless have the AVX going to one camera and the G3 going to another camera and know that the audio will have to be adjusted on one for the delay?

is the latency issue a deal breaker or simply an annoyance?

the price. size, ease of connection makes today's b&h sale tempting.

i look forward to any real-world experiences about use and quality.

thanks in advance.

be well.

The easier mounting of the AVX series looks amazing but I have a few questions for anyone who has worked with the both the AVX series and the G3 series. As a point of reference we have recorded using the SKP 100 G3 plug in transmitter/Sennheiser 835 dynamic mic. We would likely purchase the AVX-835 hand held mic to accompany this kit. This would be for interviews that would take place in a variety of settings including noisy outdoor situations.

How would you compare the audio quality of this set vs the G3?

How bad is the latency?

How long do the batteries last? I think I would miss having AA batteries since they are so easy to replace. We have stack of rechargeables and we replace the set before each shoot before the crew goes out.

I am also a little concerned about microphones being digital. We often shoot in NYC or Los Angeles where interference can be an issue but surprising we have had very few issues the with our G3 kits over the years. Does the signal on the AVX degrade gracefully or is it more like a cell phone where audio quickly becomes unintelligible?

The ME2 lav that is included with bodypack with both the G3 and AVX not considered very good by most audio folks. So plan on spending at least $100 to upgrade.
The AVX has about the highest latency I've seen (a whopping 19ms).
The in/out gain is auto, but seems to sound ok with typical dialog. Music and S/FX is another story
The TX and RX batteries are propitiatory (non-replaceable LiPO) that allegedly last for about five hours or so. The receiver on the other hand, shuts on/off with the camera or recorder's Phantom Power which can extend run time.

I love the compact form factor, but autogain is not my thing and I can't deal with the proprietary battery either. For no nonsense plug and play, I stick with the Rodelink. The only problem being the extremely bulky transmitters and receivers. The AVX system is pretty amazing in that regard.

Can't argue with this price though! If I didn't have 3 sets of Rodelinks already, I'd be all over this.

you're speaking for "most" of audio folks? I have to call nonsense on that. having used the ME2 for hundreds of shoots, i've yet to have someone take issue with it. Just because there are better lavs out there, doesn't make the ME2 a bad mic. It's one of the most ubiquitous mics on the market. For many folks and situations, it's a perfectly suitable mic.

I've read 2-5 hours on the one battery, and around 9-15 hrs on the other. And heard the handheld mic wasn't good. The batteries are $50 each for extras.
They can be plugged into USB power while being used to help with the battery. I don't have any experience yet; just reading reviews and forums

Is there any reason to believe that they will also lower the price on the kit with the MKE2 mic?
I have one of those and i would love another. But with the MKE2. I keep checking the
B&H's site.
Was just in Ireland - doing some b-roll of a new indy feature film I hope to do this year.
I used the avx system with the MKE2. The link is below. It's just one side of the conversation.
It's just the raw sound - it's not been mixed in anyway. Recording to roland r26
Posting just to post.

Of which OST lavs would provide the person their best bang for buck:

That is likely because you're not a sound recordist, but a cameraman.

And yeah, tonnes and tonnes of cameramen just use the stock lavs :-/

Well I'm one of those folks.

There is a difference between a microphone built to a specification as opposed to built to a price.

Having used the ME2 I can tell you it is an entry level electret with a sound and build quality far below something along the lines of the MKE2. I'm not trying to rag on your choice of microphones. Hey let's face it, most folks on these forums wouldn't drop what they paid for a complete wireless system just on a microphone. If the ME2 works well for you, then great. But I always replace it first thing and move it to the backup mic pouch. What, Mr. frugal spending coin? Yes in this case it is worth it in my twisted opinion. As a side note... I was on a local interview shoot where the AVX setup was employed, and the producer listening on headphones had to just take them off because the delay was too bothersome to deal with. I measured 24ms from the camera return.

Wishing all a great Tuesday!

"Is the delay a deal breaker?"

As is the case with many audio questions:

It depends.

Here's an example. At NAB I went around doing some interviews with some manufacturers. In this video I did at the Sennheiser booth, I was using a Lectro wireless system, and Brian Walker, the Sennheiser rep, was using an AVX system. The outputs of both the Lectro and AVX systems were both plugged into the camera. You can see/hear for yourself how it worked:

As you can see, there's really no huge issue with delay or phasing, BUT, we never really talk over each other, and I did a dialogue edit pass before I uploaded the video (mainly to cut down on the BG noise of the show floor). But, for this type of stuff the AVX system worked very well.

- Yes, I AM speaking for "most" audio folks?
"For many folks and situations, it's a perfectly suitable mic"
- Whatever floats 'your' boat. Situation: It's the only mic available.
