Will this work off of phantom power from a Tascam P2-HD? Or the phantom power from a Canon Xh-a1? How directional is the pick-up pattern on this mic? Also, how far away can you be from a subject and still pick up crisp and clear audio?
 
Yes it will work with phantom power from any devices that supplies standard 48v using the barrel adapter included. I believe both of your items are included.. In all other respects it's identical to the 416P with respect to pickup pattern, etc.

With respect to your other questions.. Both are very subjective. Youll need to do your research on the Sennheiser 416 mic and decided if it's for you. It's an industry standard mic.
