Sending the fs700 to sony for upgrade

Griping is fine. My only complaint was that people were using THIS thread to start bitching about what Sony did or didn't promise, threatening lawsuits and the like. I want to know information about upgrading the camera, and that was ostensibly what this thread was about. My suggestion is to start a "I WANT TO SUE THE PANTS OFF OF SONY" thread. Make sense? CHEERS!

its pretty easy to look back at evil thoughts post history and see that he is not interested in contributing to this community in a helpful way. as 99% of his posts are about sony products it appears that he works for them in some form or another. he is very abrasive towards any negative comments directed at the shady dealings of sony and their false advertising with this camera. ?

I don't work for Sony, and I have contributed many things, like answered questions about lenses and speedbooster. I simply think it's outright stupid to threaten lawsuit on forums, demand (as if Sony owes you something), 10-bit video as part of hardware upgrade, and post stupid things like I will never buy Sony again.

My answer is Go sell your camera and buy Canon or something, instead of posting idiotic empty threats on the internet forums

How dare you post about Sony products on a forum about Sony cameras. I mean what were you thinking? LOL... OK enough, Jesus..

I was contacted by my dealer with instructions and when I called the sony service ctr (teakneck NJ) I was told to email my request and they since responded with "when the update was available they will contact me to let me know". They have my email address. Hopefully they'll email me the instructions soon and we'll see what happens. IMHO it's actually a good thread, it's the only place where our frustrations are heard. I agree no sense beating a dead horse and let's get back to more constructive gear talk and keep each other informed. I love my camera, and I'm sure we can all agree on the information Dan Keating has provided has been promising so far. I'm confident once we see the new footage no one will complain. So far even the 8-bit S-log didn't look half bad. Time will tell though I am confident and look forward to this upgrade. Now does anyone want to buy a slightly used pix 240??? Haha. Joking but may not be soon. Stay tuned :)

Sounds like you got the exact same information I did. I also sent the email to Teaneck, NJ. Hopefully I'll hear back soon!

What's the hurry...unless you've sold a 4k gig...let them get the process down...why let your camera be the one they. Practice on....right?

Mostly so I can look at where I'll have downtime and coordinate around shoots to get it sent off. We don't even have the 4K recorders on the market yet, so it's not about shooting 4K now. I want S-log2, but I mostly want to get it done and out of the way, haha.

S-log!! Yes that's the one I want to tryout first. Despite it's beautiful imagery, highlight rolloff needs some help, I'm sure the engineers know that and hopefully addressed it. 8bits :( oh well...however I can see them (maybe at a later date) offer us 10bit down the road to extend sales. By then we'll probably be knee deep in 4k, but who knows? I'll keep you posted. Please do the same. Thanks

Best,
Anthony

here's the small shooting with my FS700, upgraded to ver.3.00 :
https://vimeo.com/68636352

the test i've done with Sony's camera last month had the firmware ver.2.3xx and the official upgrade is now ver.3.00. i found couple of minor struggle with ver.2.3xx, ISO setting, SDI REC trigger, but it's all fixed now.

sorry for the footages was all 240fps stuff, i promise that regular 24,25,30P has much, much crisper looks.

feel like S-Log2 will give us at least 0.5, hopefully 1 stop more for DR. looking forward to see the major house will do the accurate DR test but to me S-Log2 with 8bit AVCHD works nicely. all the footages above shot by naked FS700 + $20 monopod :)

Hey Freiheit,

The S-Log 2 looks great. The DR is really nice and it just looks "Right."

When you say "Naked" FS700, do you mean just using the internal SDHC card? Or is it sill recorded to a recorder?

Also, was the footage graded? Or just straight from camera?

Thanks again. Now I'm just excited about the S-Log since the 4K is somewhat of a bust, at least for me because of price.

well evil... that could still be about sony products mixed with 3rd party products couldn't it? so my point and your undieing loyalty to sony/ post history all still stand true. and if i recall correctly, not a single person asked for your "answer" on what to do with their cameras. they did however, ask why you injected your condescending and disrespectful opinion. you probably work for sony or are obviously connected to them somehow so people are even more disinterested in your tough guy answers. and thanks for respectfully calling those with different views than your own, idiotic and stupid... several times now. to reply, companies do in fact owe customers what they advertise, especially once money changes hands and especially concerning tools used to make a living.

and to the others, there is nothing wrong with people venting and trying to get organized online. topics will take turns based on how people feel about said topics. the thread topic is "sending the fs for the upgrade" people are justifiably unhappy with this so you are gonna to have to suffer through the opinions comments of those who see this situation negatively. to echo what others have said towards those unhappy with the situation, "if you don't like it, well, tough". we are complaining about extra hardware and fees, you are complaining about complaining... but that's ok, you're allowed an opinion and have a place to comment. the technical info always surfaces when it's available.

...even if you're disrespectful, and probably work for sony.

Your tests have been very helpful and your work is beautiful. I'm really happy to hear your thoughts on S-log, certainly encouraging.

I'm thinking with an external recorder in a 10bit wrapper maybe that .05/1 stop will increase? I can say now with some time under my belt with the camera, I can see a relatively big difference between prores 220 and AVCHD on my monitor. Probably for small increments like that we can't see the difference online. But it's there, even with a little amount of CG I can see a big difference on how far I can push the footage. It's all very encouraging and look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks
Anthony

Dear Dan,

I appreciate your commitment in informing about CD's work. I'm interested in finding out if you have any news in this area. Since the 2k raw output seems to be severely flawed in high frame rates, it would be good to know if the Odyssey 7Q will be able to record 4K 120 fps bursts.

Regarding the matter what Sony did or did not promise, I am not particularly fond of the idea of sending my camera for hardware upgrading, since that was never advertised. I use my camera for work and sending it away is a risk in not being able to do a job or for the camera breaking in transport, causing even more problems. To my opinion Sony is damaging their reputation by this and a fair compensation for that would be to give you the permission to make the 7Q as capable as their own recorder in recording the output from the FS700.

As so many have stated there's probably no one who will purchase the Sony-recorder for their FS700 only. I've seen it on F5 and F55, and there it's a completely different deal since it's integrated with the camera in a completely different way and the camera can run from the same battery. I'm not sure if you're in any place to make suggestions to Sony without risking your cooperation, but if you are, please let them know that there are customers out there who would really appreciate if we could do this on the 7Q and that their own recorder isn't an option and will never be.

It took me months after paying until I received my FS700 (I payed it in mid July and received it in mid November), at the same time the F5/F55 was announced. Now I'm a bit disappointed about how all this have worked out, since it seems I just could've saved up a bit more money and bought an F5 instead, if I would go for Sony's recorder option. So if they choose to cripple the output to the 7Q I might as well start considering to sell my camera instead and go for some other manufacturer. If I make that choice I will probably not buy a Sony camera in a very long time, since I tend not to make the same mistake twice.

Best regards,
Milan

Dear Milan,

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, I have been very busy so I hope you understand.

The 4K 120 fps mode (which is buffered in the camera for around 4 seconds) plays back at a slower speed.

We need to learn the playback speed of this mode. We may be able to record this mode.

We will know more later.

On one hand it is a shame to have to send your FS700 to Sony for the hardware/firmware upgrade.

On the other hand, they are improving the camera, making more improvements than what would be possible without the hardware upgrade.

Of course, we would love to be able to record 4K Raw from the FS700.

We are offering the ability to record 4K in a very popular compressed codec.

This is, in our opinion, a big deal for many FS700 owners, as this provides a practical way to record 4K, as the file sizes are more manageable.

Respectfully,

Dan Keaton

Hi Dan,
i know you mentioned it but are you closer to a solution to taking the raw footage from the fs700 and convert it to dnXhd or "the other codec" and preserve the 10-bit or even 12?

thanks for your time!

Another quick question, Dan. In regards to order fulfillment when the 7Q becomes available, do you expect the current preorders to push back general availability or will there be stock on hand for those of us who haven't preordered yet?

Some good points. Legally it's a tough call and i think Sonys solution might be costing them money because new hardware, shipping, service is probably more than $400 for a corporate. Witness how much the F3 slog update used to be.

However it is an interesting idea to see whether Sony can be lobbied to remove that RAW restriction but at the same time we don't know why or how, and i'm not that fussed about it anyway.

I'm curious whether anyone here will go down the Sony route - with interface and recorder and why? I can see someone who has an F5/F55 and 700 getting the interface but it's a massive investment and overkill really, there's a couple of observations:

- the output of the F5/F55 is 14 bit verses 12 bit
- the 4K stuff i've seen is quite noisy, probably a function of running ISO2000, so i think we'd always post process it perhaps down to 2K
- The 12 bit range is lovely, but the F5 appears to offer more (totally not quantative observation - does anyone have any exterior F5 RAW files?).

I think the 700 is much more suited to the CD solution than Sonys, which are really targeted at the next cameras up. I can't see it eating into Sonys sales of their recorder.

Dan mentioned that the CD will still record burst 4K which to be honest is probably all i'd ever want anyway and was great to hear.

So the only real differences are the filesize of a Sony RAW vs 16 bit DPX and the fact that you could choose to debayer a RAW differently.

The only outstanding question mark for me, with the O7, is the uncompressed nature of those 4K files, but that's something that could be addressed in the future. I'd happily take the current offering (and indeed have preordered it)

cheers
Paul

Dear Paul,

I am trying to catch up on questions that I have failed to answer.

This is in response to your comment about 4K file sizes.

On Saturday, June 30, 2013, we made an important announcement about our Odyssey7Q.

We increased the capacity of our SSD's while lowering the price, we added more features and lowered the price of the Recording Option that supports the Sony FS700, and we changed to recording 4K from the FS700 in DPX mode to recording it in compressed mode using the very popular compressed codec.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...dyssey7Q-Major-Announcement-Convergent-Design

Thus, using our Odyssey7Q with the FS700 is now more affordable.

Odyssey7Q ...................................................$2,295 (US Prices)
+ Two 256 GB SSD’s .........................................$395 each
+ Sony+ Option (which includes FS700 support).....$795
+ USB 3.0 SSD interface .....................................$25

Total $3,905 (US)

We feel that recording 4K in the very popular compress codec will allow more people to record in 4K as the file sizes are much more manageable.

Dan, does that mean you did manage to get 10,12-bit from raw and convert it into compressed codec? (regarding fs700)

Dear FreshTEA,

This is something that we definitely will be doing.

I do not expect this specific function to be ready when we initially ship, but we will add it via a free firmware update if one has purchased our Sony+ Recording Option.

I hope everyone understands that programming and testing these features takes time and we do not want to delay releasing the unit.

Another quick question, Dan. In regards to order fulfillment when the 7Q becomes available, do you expect the current preorders to push back general availability or will there be stock on hand for those of us who haven't preordered yet?

Dear Jshbckr,

I do recommend that you contact your dealer and place a pre-order if you are interested.

(Of course, this is self-serving on my part, the more customers that place pre-orders, the more dealers that place pre-orders with us, the more that we build.)

It is not too late to place a pre-order. Our first months production is not sold out yet, but it is getting very close.

I hope everyone understands my candor.

We have been through this before when we introduced the nanoFlash. There was a lot of pent-up demand, and we had a backlog situation which was painful.

We do expect a lot of orders between now and when we start shipping. Those that wait until we start shipping may have to wait until we fulfill the orders placed earlier.

To be clear, some dealers have predicted a demand for the Odyssey7Q and placed pre-orders to meet that demand. But, every dealer has been very conservative in their pre-orders, but this is to be expected.

Certain industry expects have been talking to us, they feel that the Odyssey7Q will be ordered in large quantities.

(We certainly hope so, we have attempted to put all of the great features into one compact device, and we offer it at a very reasonable price (in my opinion.))

I hope this helps.
